THE DARKROOM EFFECT!

 Genesis 39:20-22 TLB

He threw Joseph into prison, where the king's prisoners were kept in chains. [21] But the Lord was with Joseph there, too, and was kind to him by granting him favor with the chief jailer. [22] In fact, the jailer soon handed over the entire prison administration to Joseph, so that all the other prisoners were responsible to him.

Does anyone remember the old process of developing and printing photos? I'm not quite sure of the whole process, but I certainly know that without the darkroom, the process would be incomplete. In fact, it would be impossible.

As instant as the “camera” was in those days (there are still a few of those around), the photos still needed to go through that process of development before printing, without which you wouldn’t be able to see the beautiful images captured with the camera. Nobody likes the darkness, but sometimes it’s the only place where we can truly be alone with our thoughts and the Lord.

The Lord assures us in Psalm 23:4 that He would always walk with us in the darkness, so there won’t be any reason to fear the darkness.

Joseph essentially went through the darkroom effect to be prepared and developed for his assignment. The darkroom effect is the place of preparation! The darker the process, the more brightly the finished product. Check your photos.

Just like the photos, if you choose not to print them, they remain in negative format, but they are of no use to anyone, including you, as you’ll be unable to see the images taken.

James 1:2-3 tells us it’s joyful to go through the darkroom season, which he called “trials” or “tests,” seen as designed by the Lord Himself to strengthen our faith. When trials occur, we should count it all joy. God is sovereign over all things, including trials. These trials would always appear to us going through them as darkness, which may be scary and worrying, but the Lord is always with us to keep building, shaping, and developing us for His use.

If we don’t allow the Lord to put us in a darkroom, we won’t be ready for the destination He has planned for us. Like Joseph, character and strength needed to be developed in him for going on to Pharaoh’s palace, and that can only take place in the darkroom, in isolation or seclusion.

David was anointed King in 1 Samuel 16 but became enthroned in 2 Samuel 5. Why? He was in the darkroom being prepared, fashioned, trained, and developed for the throne. The Lord took him, as He did Joseph, through all kinds of training—physical, mental, spiritual, combat, and more—all to prepare him to fit where God was taking him.

What is the Lord preparing you for that you’ve been placed in the darkroom for? Whatever it is, don’t fight the darkroom process; embrace it. Everything needed for the journey and destination is in the darkroom and only materializes after the development.

The darkroom process creates divine stamina and strength. It develops godly and excellent wisdom and insight. It enhances clarity of vision and deep conviction. Above all, the darkroom process develops staying faith and hope because we recognize in the darkroom that every cloud has a silver lining if the Lord is by our side.

The gain in the darkroom process far outweighs the pain. The darkroom process is a period in our life where there are many difficulties and trials. Associated with it are feelings of distress, doubt, and perhaps alienation from God. It may also cause feelings of discouragement, confusion, and even anger. Often during such times, we may ask questions like: ‘Why God?’ and ‘What am I supposed to do?’ but listening to David in 1 Samuel 17:34-37 should encourage us in knowing that the darkroom effect helps us to fine-tune our skills and talent in preparation for God’s purpose.

Rather than dread the darkroom effect, seek the Lord on what He’s doing and allow it to run its course.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to recognise when you’re putting me in the darkroom for your purpose and help me embrace it and hold on until I am done in Jesus’ name, amen.
