THE DUCK MENTALITY!

John 8:12 AMPC

Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life.

We’ve all seen the cute line of ducklings waddling after their mother in springtime. Wherever she goes, they go! Whenever she stops, they stop! Whatever she does, they do! Strange? No! It’s an ingrained mindset that tells the ducklings it’s in their best interest to follow their leader—their mother. This is the mindset every believer should and must have to live righteously and victoriously: to follow the leader, Christ, as steadfastly as these ducklings follow their mother.

Did you play “Follow the Leader” or “Simon Says”? Were you good at them? Did you do exactly as you were told, or did you compromise? There are so many things and people to follow in the world, but how can we be sure that whatever and whomever we’re following is leading us right? Are they the right leader?

We can follow a lifestyle, a principle, a group, or a person (which is more the style right now). Whom are you following? We most likely have a "duck mindset" with whoever we are following because they must be someone who can add value to us. We follow them because something attracted us to them—their way of doing things, character, or influence. We see them as an example of what we wish to be or do.

But the Bible says the most important thing is to follow Christ. Paul even says in 1 Corinthians 11:1 to follow him as he follows Christ, that is, we should imitate him as he imitates Christ. Are you imitating the one you’ve chosen to follow? Like the ducklings, do we do whatever they do, say, and go, as long as it aligns with the scriptures?

Christ, the perfect Son of God, should be the ultimate person we follow. He knows what’s best for us, and since He’s already died for us, it shows there’s nothing He can’t and won’t do for us. He has also prepared a place for us in eternity according to John 14:2. It doesn’t make any sense then to go in the opposite direction from the one He’s leading and wants us to follow Him to.

Only if and when we follow Christ, the light that shines in the dark world we live in, will we end up at the right location. Jesus, in Luke 6:13, called together all His disciples and chose only twelve to follow Him, into whom He poured Himself, to be an intimate example to and to replicate Him. The one thing these men had in common was in following the Messiah. Are you following Him yet? Or are you following those who appear to follow Him?

We may follow people, groups, or doctrines without realizing that they are wrong until either someone points that out or something happens to open our eyes. All through the Old Testament, the Lord’s running theme was for the Israelites not to follow after the gods of those around them, but that was too difficult for them, as it seems to be for us today. We profess to follow God but only as long as we’re happy with Him, we get what we want from Him, and He doesn’t ask too much from us.

There are so many people, including Christians, whom 1 Peter 2:15 describes as “forsaking the right way and have gone astray.” There seems to be a pattern of following great people, including men and women of God, without checking the spirit operating in them according to 1 Thessalonians 5:21, to be sure that we’re following the right person, doctrine, and message.

Whom we follow matters because the voice we listen to is the direction we go. As Christ says in John 10:27-29, His sheep (which we are) know and follow His voice. Following should not be blind but a choice! As Joshua 24:15 dictates, choose today whom to follow.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to follow after you, no matter the cost and those whom you’ve sent along to guide and direct me, may I never compromise in follwing the truth in Jesus’ name, amen.
