WORRIER!

Matthew 6:25-34 AMPC

Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing? [26] Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? [27] And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life? [28] And why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. [29] Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these. [30] But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and green and tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you of little faith? [31] Therefore do not worry and be anxious, saying, What are we going to have to eat? or, What are we going to have to drink? or, What are we going to have to wear? [32] For the Gentiles (heathen) wish for and crave and diligently seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows well that you need them all. [33] But seek ( aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. [34] So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.

Worrying is choosing not to trust God! Are you a worrier? Worrying is a form of thinking about the future, defined as thinking about future events in a way that leaves you feeling anxious or apprehensive. It reveals a lack of faith that God loves us and is in control. We should not worry; instead, we should trust in God, giving ourselves to Him for His use and safekeeping. When you dwell on your problems, you will become anxious and angry. But if you concentrate on God and His goodness, you will find peace. Where do you focus your attention?

Don’t worry! “Don’t worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing is gonna be all right.” Even the world tells you not to worry about anything. God didn’t create us to worry!

We must see worry as someone paying interest for a problem that is yet to or may never occur! Worry is like a dog barking at every passer-by but not able to bite because of its restraints. The barking does not scare the passer-by because they know the dog is restrained and therefore harmless.

Life is full of worries, whichever way you look at it. We worry over everything, even things as mundane as what to wear and what to eat. “How do I pay the bill?” “How will my children do this or that?” “How am I going to manage?” see Matthew 6:25.

Worry overwhelms the best of us, and we can find ourselves feeling pretty miserable and depressed. However, the Bible tells us not to worry, which may not be helpful in the face of overwhelming circumstances. Jesus commands us not to worry but to trust in God who knows us well, knows what we need, and is capable of meeting those needs according to Philippians 4:19. The question in verse twenty-seven is one we must ask ourselves frequently. It will help us focus on God’s abundant provisions and not on lack and need.

So, how do we stop worrying? Life would be so easy if all we needed to do to stop worrying was to say to ourselves, “That’s it, no more worrying.” Unfortunately, it’s not that easy, and we do worry a lot about anything and everything.

According to Philippians 4:6, when we get to the state of mind where we are overly concerned about something or someone and stressing, even from genuine concern, which Jesus did not prohibit, we should keep things in their proper perspective. Our first response should be supplication—continuance in earnest prayer, with thanksgiving, for the innumerable favors we’ve already received and for dangers, evils, and deaths averted.

Worry will creep in a lot of times, but we must learn to do as Apostle Paul instructs in 2 Corinthians 10:5: take the worrying thoughts captive. That means every time we start to worry about “things,” we must take the thoughts to God.

Can anyone make a difference in their life by worrying? Luke 12:25 asks if anyone can grow taller or extend their life span by even an hour by worrying. Every time we worry about our future, we assume that God is unable to control what happens to us. He is in control, and we have nothing to fear or worry about if we put our trust in Him. We must deliberately set down the worry at Jesus’s feet and leave it there.

Whatever things concern a child of God, whether they are spiritual or temporal, great or small, God concerns Himself with them. What affects you affects Him; in all our afflictions, He is afflicted. When we know, understand, and accept that God cares for us, we won’t have worrying thoughts about ourselves according to 1 Peter 5:7.

Do not worry! Do not be anxious! Do not be moved! You have God’s assurance of His sustenance and supply.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to encourage myself in You, knowing that You have everything under control and would not let me fall. In Jesus’ name, amen.
