CRY ME A RIVER!
Psalm 42:3 AMPC
My tears have been my food
day and night, while men say to me all day long, Where is your God?
“Stop crying! Wipe your
tears! No need to cry! Crying doesn’t solve anything!”
We often hear these words,
but the Bible is full of tears—even Jesus wept in John 11:35.
The phrase "cry me a
river" is an idiom used sarcastically to express a lack of sympathy or scepticism
toward someone who is complaining or being overly emotional about their
problems. It suggests that the person is crying so much that they could fill a
river with their tears, but the speaker does not care or is dismissing their
complaints.
There are crocodile tears,
but there are also genuine tears. Anything and everything can induce
tears—happiness, joy, laughter, pain, disappointment, and more.
Scripture covers all kinds
of crying and the reasons behind them, but it’s encouraging to know that our
tears are never wasted in God’s hands.
Sometimes, after a breakup,
someone might say, “I cried a river over you, now you can cry me a river.”
If someone complains about a
minor inconvenience, a sarcastic response might be, “Cry me a river!”
This phrase is often used to
dismiss complaints in everyday conversations, sometimes humorously, sometimes
sharply.
But have you ever
experienced the kind of despair that makes you cry all night and all day? Have
you felt pain so deep that the tears just won’t stop?
Sometimes, life hits us so
hard that we feel God has forsaken us, and all we can do is cry—like the
Israelites in Psalm 137, who wept by the rivers of Babylon, longing for God’s
intervention. Why are you crying?
Has the Lord forsaken
you?
Do you feel forgotten or
ignored?
Tears are a part of life!
God created us with
emotions. He hears our cries and sees every tear we shed. There is a time for
tears according to Ecclesiastes 3:4.
Crying is our emotional
response to life’s challenges, and it’s okay to cry. Be comforted knowing that
God created us to cry. Sometimes, crying helps us to be refreshed and
restored—especially since our tears are temporary according to Psalm 30:5.
Don’t stop yourself from
having a good cry. Don’t hide your tears. God sees your tears and hears your
cries stated in Psalm 34:15, and He will come to your rescue.
Tears are therapeutic:
- Basal tears keep our eyes
moist and healthy.
- Reflex tears flush out
irritants.
- Emotional tears, triggered
by our feelings, contain higher levels of stress hormones and help us process
pain and stress.
Crying soothes us, relieves
pain, and can even draw support from others—and from the Lord in Psalm 18:6.
When was the last time you
cried? Or do you think crying is only for the weak? Even Jesus, the Savior of
the world, wept out of compassion and pain—so who are we not to cry?
The psalmist wrote that his
tears became his food because he couldn’t eat, so deep was his longing for God according
to Psalm 42:3. Have you cried out for God yet?
David says in Psalm
145:18-19 that God graciously helps those who cry out to Him, and in Psalm
56:8, he concludes that his tears were not unnoticed—God was aware of his
suffering, recording and storing his tears as memorials that become answered
prayers in 2 Kings 20:5.
Who do you cry to for help?
Be mindful, as Job found out in Job 30:24, that not everyone will respond to
your cry for help.
Cry a river if you must, but
be encouraged and comforted:
Luke 6:21b says, “Blessed
are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” Cry! God hears and sees your tears.
PRAYER: Lord, thank You for
seeing every tear and hearing every cry. Comfort me in my moments of sorrow and
remind me that my tears are not wasted in Your sight. Help me to trust You
through every season of weeping, knowing that joy will come. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
