CUT YOUR COAT ACCORDING TO YOUR CLOTH!
Proverbs 22:7 TLB
Just as the rich rule the
poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.
No matter one’s size, you
can only use what is available to make something. You cannot make a full adult
garment from a meter of fabric-it’s impossible. The phrase "cut your coat
according to your cloth" isn't directly from the Bible, but it embodies a
principle that aligns with biblical teachings: live within your means and be
wise and prudent with your resources.
Our text highlights the
dangers of debt and the importance of financial prudence.
Money is a form of power and
can be used for good or evil. Debt is a kind of bondage, often requiring the
payment of high interest and limiting one’s freedom and opportunities. Yet,
many spend money they do not have, living beyond their means to fit in or to
satisfy desires. In essence, they are trying to stretch a small piece of fabric
to cover more than it can.
The Bible encourages us to
apply wisdom in all areas of life. Proverbs 21:20 states, “The wise store up
choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down,” emphasizing the
importance of saving and managing resources wisely. We should avoid spending on
things we neither need nor can afford.
To “cut your coat according
to your cloth” means to make plans and decisions based on the resources you
actually have, not on what you wish you had. In practical terms, it means
living within your means, spending only what you can afford, and adapting your
ambitions to your current circumstances.
Contentment and living
within your means is echoed in 1 Timothy 6:6: “But godliness with contentment
is great gain”. If someone loses their job, they need to reduce their expenses
and avoid unnecessary purchases-in other words, they must "cut their coat
according to their cloth" to avoid financial trouble.
Jesus illustrates this
principle in Luke 14:28: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you
first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to
complete it?” Planning and considering resources before undertaking a project
is key to success.
Stewardship-managing our
resources wisely-helps us avoid unnecessary debt, as seen in Proverbs 6:6-8 and
1 Timothy 6:6-10. We are also called to focus on eternal values rather than
material possessions, as taught in Matthew 6:25 and Luke 12:15.
The parable of the prodigal
son in Luke 15:11-16 is a clear example of the consequences of not cutting
one’s coat according to one’s cloth. The son squandered his inheritance and
ended up in poverty.
While the Bible encourages
faith and generosity-such as Jesus feeding the five thousand in John 6 and the
call to “enlarge the place of your tent” according to Isaiah 54-these passages
do not promote reckless living or ignoring practical wisdom. Instead, they
highlight that faith sometimes calls us to trust God for provision, but always
with a foundation of stewardship and prudence.
We must be prudent and
responsible with what we have, living by the wisdom of “cut your coat according
to your cloth.”
PRAYER: Lord God, grant me
the wisdom and strength to live according to my means, trusting that you will
daily, as promised, provide my necessities. In Jesus’ name, amen.
