DO WHAT YOU CAN!
Mark 14:1-9 CSB
It was two days before the
Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the
scribes were looking for a cunning way to arrest Jesus and kill him. [2]
"Not during the festival," they said, "so that there won't be a
riot among the people." [3] While he was in Bethany at the house of Simon
the leper, as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar
of very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured it on his
head. [4] But some were expressing indignation to one another: "Why has
this perfume been wasted? [5] For this perfume might have been sold for more
than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they began to scold
her. [6] Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She
has done a noble thing for me. [7] You always have the poor with you, and you
can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have me.
[8] She has done what she could; she has anointed my body in advance for
burial. [9] Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole
world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."
What Are You Doing for the
Lord, His Kingdom, and the Body of Christ?
Many people claim to be
working for God, yet not all truly serve Him. As followers of Christ, we must
do what we can for the King, His kingdom, and His people. Jesus reminds us in Matthew
26:40-43 that whatever we do for others, we do for Him.
We often hear phrases like “Do
your best,” “Try your hardest,” and “Do what you can.” While these are
encouraging, the motives behind our actions matter. There are times when even I
have done good things with the wrong intentions—and vice versa.
Christ strengthens us to do
all things, as stated in Philippians 4:13. This does not mean God will bless
everything we do, but rather that He empowers us to accomplish what He has
called us to do—nothing more, nothing less.
According to 1 Corinthians
10:13, God will not allow us to be tested beyond what we can bear. He does not
promise to remove temptation or trials, but He does promise to limit their
intensity. He does not expect us to do what we lack the capacity for, but
rather what He has empowered and graced us to do.
So, what can you do for the
Lord? What has He empowered you to accomplish?
Whatever we do in life will
attract either applause and compliments or murmuring and criticism. Why?
Because motives and interests shape perceptions.
Some people choose to do
nothing yet eagerly criticize those who are doing their best. However,
righteous living requires setting aside personal desires to fulfil God’s will
and purpose. Sometimes, this means stepping outside our comfort zones to do
what is required of us. Colossians 3:23 declares that whatever we do must be
done wholeheartedly, as if working for the Lord rather than for human
masters.
This attitude must be the
foundation of our motives. We should do what we can—not for personal gain, but
for the glory of the Father.
The heart posture of the
guests at the scene was evident in their murmuring, but Jesus rebuked them. The
unnamed woman, in appreciation of what Jesus had done for her, seized the
opportunity to honour her Savior by doing what she could. Jesus pointed out
that the poor would always be present, and if people were truly concerned for
them, they could help them at any time.
This woman had no idea of
the full significance of her actions or their relevance to the gospel. She
simply wanted to show kindness while she had the chance. She might not have
been able to care for Jesus’ body in death, but she chose to express her love
while He was still alive.
She did what she could, and
her story continues to be told today—and will be remembered for eternity.
Can you do the same? Can you
do what you can until eternity?
Let your faith, as James
2:17 teaches, be accompanied by action.
PRAYER: Lord God, grant me
the strength, grace, and wisdom to do whatever I can for Your glory, through
Christ Jesus. Amen.
