PIDGIN: THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER!

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love dey kind and patient, e nor dey jealous or boast

 

Jealousy or envy na bad thing! Dem dey call am green-eyed monster, e dey chop peace, contentment, and joy, leave nothing but wahala, destruction, and decay for im path.

The term "green-eyed monster" wey mean envy, na Shakespeare first use am for him play Othello. E mean say person dey vex or no dey satisfied because of wetin another person get. Bible talk say envy na act of the flesh, na sin according to Galatians 5:19–21.

Who fit stand before envy? All of us don experience and show envy before. Unfortunately, e dey everywhere, even for church, and Proverbs 3:31 warn us make we no envy anybody, especially people wey dey do bad.

Envy or jealousy na the main emotion wey make the Jewish leaders wan hand Jesus over to the Roman courts for Matthew 27:18.

Envy and jealousy dey related and sometimes people dey use am interchangeably for modern Bible translations, but dem no be the same. Envy na the feeling say you no get wetin another person get. Jealousy na the fear say you fit lose something or someone wey you get. Envy na the vex or resentment wey we feel when others get wetin we no get. Jealousy na the fear or suspicion say wetin we get fit be taken away.

We dey envy people wey we think say better pass us or get something we no get but we think say we suppose get. We dey vex out of envy when person get, gain, or buy something we no think say dem deserve or qualify for.

Jealousy na strong and overwhelming emotion. We go see something wey belong to another person, and we go want am. And we no go want make dem get am. Jealousy na hostile, disruptive, and consuming.

We no suppose envy others for their good fortune, 1 Corinthians 13:4 talk say love no dey envy. True love no dey envy. E no dey desire wetin another person get and e fit truly happy for the blessings wey others dey enjoy, even if na from the sidelines. This na quality wey sometimes hard to practice for world wey everybody dey try “keep up with the Joneses."

The heart wen no day satisfied na the root of envy. We dey experience envy when we no fit get wetin our heart desire. The Lord talk for Psalm 37:4-6 say He go give us the desires of our hearts if we delight in Him, and no be when we dey envy others.

Envy na hidden emotion wey dey always brew underneath. Jealousy dey corrupt motives, thoughts, and actions. The person wey we dey envy fit no even know and therefore no fit deal with am.

The green-eyed monster dey show up for “She dey thinner, prettier, funnier, smarter, richer, more popular, and more.” Envious heart no go allow life of peace according to Proverbs 14:30; if the heart get disease, life no fit long.

Everybody dey get green eyes sometimes; me sef dey sometimes. We all dey struggle with am, even if na unintentionally.

Envy dey create competition between people, like Rachel and her sister Leah, wey their whole life na competition after the other (see Genesis 29:31-32; 30:1-16).

For James 3:14–16, we see this strong warning about the sin of envy: “But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition for your hearts, make you no boast about am or deny the truth. This ‘wisdom’ no come down from heaven but na earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For where you get envy and selfish ambition, you go find disorder and every evil practice.”

Wherever envy dey, strife no far. Make you dey careful to avoid envy; e be like cancer to the bones.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to focus on who I be in Christ and recognize say everything come from You. Free me from the envious monster’s grip and make Your love full my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
