THE PERFECT SACRIFICE
John 1:29 AMPC
The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Look!
There is the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world!
Christ Jesus is the perfect sacrifice! What did it cost us to
be free from guilt, shame, and death? From slavery to sin? Certainly not silver
or gold or any perishable thing. The cost of our freedom is something much more
valuable than gold and silver—it is the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
The blind can't help the blind. In fact, we see in John
5:1-17 the hopelessness of relying on a mortal to save and deliver us when
they're in the same situation or worse than we are. For this reason, we needed
someone who's not in the same position we're in, whose standing is greater than
ours. In other words, sinners can’t save, deliver, or redeem sinners.
In the Old Testament sacrificial system, atonement or
redemption of sin was done by offering an unblemished and spotless lamb as a
sacrifice. Unfortunately, that was a continuous thing and not a
once-and-for-all sacrifice. It wasn’t perfect!
However, Jesus Christ became the perfect lamb and perfect
sacrifice, so He could serve as the perfect Savior. According to 1 Peter 2:22,
He was without sin, so He alone could save, deliver, and redeem mankind. Jesus
died as our Passover lamb precisely on Passover day at the exact time the lamb
was being slaughtered. He was buried during the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
symbolizing His sinless body, and He rose on the Feast of First Fruits. Only
God can orchestrate this perfect precision of prophetic word.
Jesus, by His sacrifice, fulfills the symbolism of the
Passover Lamb. But why was Jesus the only one who could fulfill the role of the
“perfect sacrifice”? Because God ordained it. As Acts 4:12 says, "Neither
is there salvation in any other, given among men, whereby we must be
saved." Salvation is in no one else. If we’re to be saved, it can only be
by Jesus Christ. If there were to be a sacrifice for sin, it would be the
sacrifice of Jesus Himself. Something He knew very well, as documented in
Hebrews 10:5-7: "Hence, when He [Christ] entered into the world, He said,
'Sacrifices and offerings You have not desired, but instead You have made ready
a body for Me [to offer]; [6] In burnt offerings and sin offerings You have
taken no delight. [7] Then I said, Behold, here I am, coming to do Your will, O
God—[to fulfill] what is written of Me in the volume of the Book.'"
Christ’s voluntary self-offering contrasts with the
inefficient sacrifices, showing that Christ fulfills perfectly “the will of
God” as to our redemption, by completely atoning for our sins as the perfect
sacrifice.
In Romans 3:25, God presented Christ as a sacrifice of
atonement, through the shedding of His blood. Christ’s blood, which according
to Hebrews 12:24, speaks better than animal blood when received by faith. He
did this to demonstrate His righteousness.
Leviticus 17:11 says life is in the blood and God has given
it to us, underscoring the action of the Lord granting the means of atonement.
That is, by the life of the animal, which ransoms the life of the offerer from
the deserved judgment to the life and blood of Christ.
Christ did just that on the cross. By His prepared body, He
entered the world while God created the opportunity for Jesus Christ to live a
totally righteous life, a life with NO sin, just like what God truly desires!
That’s what a body for Jesus accomplished.
And with three words, Jesus gave His life: “It is finished!”
Jesus truly accomplished and finished the work that God the Father willed that
He should accomplish upon this earth—the work of becoming the “perfect
sacrifice for sin.”
PRAYER:Father, thank You for preparing the body of Christ as
the perfect sacrifice for my sin, redemption, and salvation. In His name, Amen.
