THE POWER FOR CHANGE!
Acts 1:8 TLB
But when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you, you will receive power to testify about me with great effect, to
the people in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth, about my death and resurrection."
Change is a verb that means
to make someone or something different-to alter or modify the original or
faulty and replace it with something else, especially something newer or
better, or to substitute one thing for another. As a noun, change is the act or
process through which something becomes different.
From a biblical perspective,
change means to make something completely different. The power for the change
and transformation required to modify us is only empowered by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, referred to as the Helper in John 14:26, enables and helps
believers to walk in righteousness and carry out their spiritual activities
without stumbling.
In 1 Samuel 10:6, the Holy
Spirit came powerfully upon Saul, turning and transforming him into a different
person. This illustrates that true and lasting change is brought about by the
Spirit of God.
Change can be good or bad,
temporary or permanent. However, lasting change only comes from the Lord. When
we desire change, it often means we are dissatisfied with our current
situation, but we cannot change ourselves, others, or any situation without the
Spirit of God.
We all have friends and
family members we wish would change. We may have prayed for them and even asked
them to try and change, but the truth is, nobody can change themselves or
anyone else without the help of the Holy Spirit. We all need the “Helper” to
bring about true transformation.
Change occurs when there is
an acknowledgment, understanding, and acceptance that there is a need for
change, coupled with a desperate desire for that alteration in behavior,
character, or personality.
Everything and everyone in
creation is subject to change, but God remains the same forever, as He declared
in Malachi 3:6: “I, the Lord, never change.” Knowing that God does not change
should boost our confidence that He alone is qualified to change us.
God can do everything except
fail or lie, as Numbers 23:19 says, because He does not have the attributes of
frail humanity. He is incapable of being wrong or making mistakes, and
therefore, God will not change His mind concerning a decision once He has made
it, as seen in 1 Samuel 15:29. Only the Lord can give and make a lasting and
permanent change.
Notice how often we change
our minds when things don’t suit us, yet we still find it hard to change our
behavior and character when required. We are all sinners saved by grace, but
our change is a process-progress made through the power of the Holy Spirit. God
never changes, but we do. Our bodies, minds, ideas, and values all change. God
made us with the ability to change. We were created in God’s image with the
capacity, ability, and intellect to be distinctive from animals in behavior,
attitude, and character.
God is immutable; we are
not. We are liable to change, and the Holy Spirit grants us the power to effect
any desired change. Where God is infallible, we are fallible, constantly making
mistakes that require us to want to change and be better.
We may not always like
change, but change is what keeps us alive, breaking monotony and stagnation. It
is what shows us how much growth and progress we are making. We can change for
the better or for the worse, but for any change to be lasting and permanent, we
must depend on the power and Spirit of God to effect that change.
The power for change is only
through the Spirit of God, who can transform us from the old into the new man
in Christ.
PRAYER: Unchanging God, I
thank you for being the one who can change and turn my life around. Change me
for the better and for your glory, in Jesus’ name, amen.
