THE WORD ON COURAGE!
Joshua 1:9 NASB
Have I not commanded you? Be
strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the Lord your God
is with you wherever you go.”
Courage is the ability to
act on what we know is right and good—to dare to do what we should or must,
regardless of our surroundings. Courage is what helps us move beyond fear,
since fear can paralyze us. Courage does not necessarily conquer fear; it simply
renders fear ineffective. Courage gives us the confident assurance that we can
succeed.
True courage is not the
absence of fear but trusting God and doing what is right even when you are
afraid.
Where do we go to get the
courage to keep going when life seems too hard or the obstacles seem too big?
We need to remember God’s promised help in times of need—He is always with us as
described in Deuteronomy 20:1. This should give us boldness to face any
situation that comes our way. Sometimes, the most courageous thing to do in a
particular situation is to retreat or run, if that will bring about the
greatest good.
Courage comes from faith and
trust in God. When we believe that God is with us, protecting and guiding us,
fear loses its power.
We do not exist alone.
Whether we like it or not, our lives affect the lives of others and vice versa.
If we forget to rely on God for help or choose not to include Him, how will
this affect the way we influence others? See Deuteronomy 20:8. Are you facing
tomorrow with fear and worry? Would it hurt to choose to trust God in every
situation? You may end up encouraging someone else as well as yourself.
Why should I fear? Asks Psalm
27:1. True courage comes from God. Understand that God is stronger than our
mightiest foes: "for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go".
They say there is nothing to
fear but fear itself, and that is so true. We are all afraid of big changes
sometimes as seen in Genesis 46:3-4. Change may be part of God’s plan for us.
If so, what you are heading into will bring you joy and satisfaction beyond
your expectations.
Mordecai did not bow—his
determined courage came from his faith in God. He dared to stand alone. Doing
what is right will not always make us popular as seen in Esther 3:2. Those who
do right are usually in the minority, but obeying God is more important than
obeying people says Acts 5:29.
The fear of the unknown is
like the fear of darkness—we are afraid because we can’t see what is ahead. We
worry more about what we can’t see than what we can see. Our real strength and
courage should be in God. Be assured that God will give us the light we need
when we need it according to Psalm 27:1.
It should give us courage,
especially in troubled times, that God remains close by, ready to supply us
with love and comfort. We have more courage when we walk with a strong friend as
seen in Isaiah 41:10.
When you’re tempted to lose
your courage and give in to the crowd, remember Pilate (Luke 23:13-25). Pilate
had a difficult decision to make, but the roar of the crowd made him lose
courage and bow to peer pressure. Always remember that the right decision could
have unpleasant consequences—social rejection, career setbacks, or public
ridicule—but true courage comes from God, and we must rely on Him.
Wrong is wrong even if
everyone is doing it; right is right even if no one is doing it. It takes
courage to do the right thing.
PRAYER: Lord God, grant me
the courage to do the right things always, without fear or compromise, in
Jesus’ name. Amen.
