BEYOND THE CYCLE: FINDING MEANING ABOVE THE SUN!
Ecclesiastes 1:1-18 TLB
The author: Solomon of
Jerusalem, King David's son, "The Preacher." [2] In my opinion,
nothing is worthwhile; everything is futile. [3-7] For what does a man get for
all his hard work? Generations come and go, but it makes no difference. The sun
rises and sets and hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south and
north, here and there, twisting back and forth, getting nowhere. The rivers run
into the sea, but the sea is never full, and the water returns again to the
rivers and flows again to the sea . . . [8-11] everything is unutterably weary
and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied; no matter how
much we hear, we are not content. History merely repeats itself. Nothing is
truly new; it has all been done or said before. What can you point to that is
new? How do you know it didn't exist long ages ago? We don't remember what
happened in those former times, and in the future generations no one will
remember what we have done back here. [12-15] I, the Preacher, was king of
Israel, living in Jerusalem. And I applied myself to search for understanding
about everything in the universe. I discovered that the lot of man, which God
has dealt to him, is not a happy one. It is all foolishness, chasing the wind.
What is wrong cannot be righted; it is water over the dam; and there is no use
thinking of what might have been. [16-18] I said to myself, "Look, I am
better educated than any of the kings before me in Jerusalem. I have greater
wisdom and knowledge." So I worked hard to be wise instead of foolish-but
now I realize that even this was like chasing the wind. For the more my wisdom,
the more my grief; to increase knowledge only increases distress.
Have you ever felt like life
is just repeating itself? That no matter how much changes around you, the core
of human experience stays the same? This is the heart of Solomon’s message in
Ecclesiastes 1:1-18—a message that still rings true today.
The Endless Cycle of Life!
Solomon, the wisest man of
his time, opens Ecclesiastes with a sobering observation: “What has been will
be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the
sun.”
He looks at the world and
sees endless cycles. The sun rises and sets, the wind blows round and round,
rivers flow to the sea but never fill it. Human history, too, is a series of
repeated patterns—empires rise and fall, generations come and go, and the same
struggles, hopes, and disappointments play out again and again.
We live in an age obsessed
with the “new”—new technology, new trends, new ideas. Yet Solomon’s wisdom
reminds us that most of what we call new is simply a reworking of what has come
before. The Illusion of Novelty!
Verse 10 says, “Is there
anything of which one can say, ‘Look! This is something new’? It was here
already, long ago; it was here before our time.”
Even the enemy of our souls,
the devil, doesn’t invent new temptations. He recycles the old ones, dressing
them up in modern packaging. Our so-called “new” problems are often ancient
issues in disguise.
There are Limits to Human achievement!
Solomon also points out the
futility of human striving. All our achievements, no matter how impressive,
will eventually be forgotten. Verse 11 says, “No one remembers the former
generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow
them.”
We may work hard to make our
mark, but history moves on. The things that seem so important today will one
day fade into obscurity.
Sometimes, we think our
struggles are unique. We want to believe that no one else has faced what we’re
facing, that our pain or challenges set us apart. But both Ecclesiastes 9:11
and Matthew 5:45 remind us that life’s difficulties and blessings are universal.
Circumstances and challenges
are part of the human condition. What feels unique to us is, in reality, a
shared experience across generations.
If nothing is truly new, is
there any hope? Yes! The only true constant in life is the love and
faithfulness of God.
Isaiah 40:8 declares, “The
grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
God’s love, His word, and
His promises never change. While everything “under the sun” is subject to
change, decay, and repetition, God remains steadfast.
Solomon’s reflections are
not meant to leave us in despair, but to point us to a greater reality. He
concludes in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: “Now all has been heard; here is the
conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the
duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including
every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”
True meaning and fulfilment
are not found in chasing after novelty or earthly achievements, but in a
relationship with God. He alone gives purpose to our days and makes life “under
the sun” worth living.
We must learn to live with eternal
perspective! If you are searching for something truly new, something that will
satisfy your soul, look “above the sun”—to God Himself. Through Jesus Christ,
God offers us new life, new hope, and a new heart.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!”
God alone can break the
cycle and bring true transformation. He makes all things new—not just in this
life, but for eternity.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father. In
a world where everything seems to repeat and nothing truly satisfies, help me
to find my meaning, peace, and hope in You alone. Teach me not to chase after
empty things or be discouraged by life’s cycles, but to trust in Your eternal in
Jesus’ name, Amen.
