DAILY MERCY!
Lamentations 3:22-23 TLB
his compassion never ends.
It is only the Lord's mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. [23]
Great is his faithfulness; his loving-kindness begins afresh each day.
Mercy is a core part of the
gospel and God’s character, and it is something all believers are called to
practice. God’s mercy means He is compassionate, patient, and forgiving—even
when people don’t deserve it. Over and over, Scripture describes God as “merciful
and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,” as seen in Psalm
103:8.
The Hebrew word chesed
(pronounced kheh-sed)—used 149 times in Scripture—captures the depth of God’s
kindness, mercy, and covenant love. In both Hebrew and Greek, mercy is
expressed through words like kindness, lovingkindness, goodness, grace, favour,
pity, compassion, and steadfast love. So many things rise daily to consume us,
but God offers us a countermeasure of mercy to prevail over these consuming
things. His compassion never fails. In fact, not only do they not fail—they are
renewed daily.
Every day, life brings
challenges that could consume us. But God offers a countermeasure: His mercy,
which never fails. Even more amazing, His mercies are renewed daily. That means
no matter what happened yesterday, today comes with a fresh supply of grace.
The reason God’s mercy never fails is because of His faithfulness.
1 Peter 1:3 says, “All
praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy
that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
Now we live with great expectation.”
Mercy is more than exemption
from the punishment we deserve for our sins. It is receiving an undeserved
gift—salvation, the greatest undeserved gift. The sacrifice that Jesus made for
us, the sinners who rejected Him, shows us mercy in its most powerful form.
Now, we can receive eternal life if we only accept Him.
Mercy is compassion poured
out on needy people. But the mercy of God, which He expects us to model, goes
one step further. God’s mercy is undeserved favour. Even when we don’t deserve
mercy, God still extends it to us. Our sin and rebellion against God deserve
His punishment; but instead, He offers us forgiveness and eternal life. If God
was merciful toward us despite our sin, how merciful should we be toward those
who have wronged us?
God’s mercy is exhibited in
how He always steps in to save and deliver us when we least expect, deserve, or
ask for it, as stated in Exodus 19:4. As He did for them, so His mercy demands
that He does for us.
Think about your mobile
phone plan—whether it’s pay-as-you-go or monthly. Your provider won’t give you
extra data for free, won’t roll over unused data, and certainly won’t let you
keep using it if your bill is unpaid. But God’s mercy, when not used, goes with
the setting of the sun—because God releases fresh mercy daily for the day.
God shows us mercy to guide
us along the right paths and to keep our enemies from defeating us. We could
never deserve to enter God’s presence or receive His help; but because of His
love and mercy, He offers these blessings just the same. As seen in Psalm
5:7–8:
“Because of your unfailing
love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way
plain for me to follow.”
Mercy prevails! Mercy
triumphs over judgment that we well deserve, according to James 2:13. This
emphasises the importance of mercy for us, suggesting that God’s mercy is more
important than judgment, and encourages us to be compassionate and forgiving to
others.
Micah 7:18 asks a very
pertinent question: *Where is another god like God who pardons iniquity? None!
PRAYER: Merciful God, thank
You for Your loving-kindness that overwhelms me with mercy daily, in Jesus’
name. Amen.
