GODLY DIRECTION!

Psalm 32:8-9 TLB

I will instruct you (says the Lord) and guide you along the best pathway for your life; I will advise you and watch your progress. [9] Don't be like a senseless horse or mule that has to have a bit in its mouth to keep it in line!

 

Verse 9 warns us: “Do not be like a horse or mule, without understanding, that must be controlled with bit and bridle or else it will not come near you.” There is a difference between stubbornness and rebellion. Rebellion is actively resisting authority, control, or convention, while stubbornness is a refusal to change one’s attitude or position. Proverbs 14:12 warns us about following our own way, which may seem right but leads to destruction.

We all need direction to reach our destination. If we want to arrive correctly and on time, we must depend on the Lord’s leading. Without God’s direction, we are likely to fail in almost everything we do. As believers, we cannot afford to go every which way; we should not be content to be led by the flesh but by the Spirit, as Romans 8:4 teaches. We must never resist the Lord’s leading or be stubborn toward His guidance.

Divine direction simply means being led by God’s will and His word through His Spirit, often expressed through revelation. According to Jeremiah 33:3, God gives divine direction about great and mighty things we wouldn’t otherwise know, if we call on Him.

Naturally, we all want to know what to do, especially when life’s issues get complicated. God made us for a purpose. He knows the best route, the right time, and the best way to get us where we need to be.

Accessing divine direction comes at a price—the price of total submission to God. We must have a Kingdom mentality and serve God in His way and on His terms (Matthew 6:24). We must continue daily in God’s presence and be subject to His Spirit (Galatians 5:25) so we can recognize, acknowledge, and receive divine direction. The life of a believer is expressed from the inside out; what we receive in the spirit is what we express outwardly.

Total obedience is essential for following divine direction. We must understand the principle of obedience and be intentional about it. Disobedience is a rejection of God’s word, as seen in 1 Samuel 15:20-24. God gave Saul specific instructions, but Saul chose to do what he thought was best, which was disobedience. Obedience means following God’s word personally and willingly, not under compulsion.

Obedience is a major key to Kingdom mentality and comes with a price. Many times, we ask God for direction, but when He gives us instructions, we choose our own way, perhaps because we think His instructions are too difficult. But according to 1 John 5:3, God’s commands—His divine directions—are not burdensome.

Saul claimed to have obeyed all of God’s instructions, but in reality, he had rebelled by doing what he thought was best. Many of us do the same: we ask God for direction but end up doing what we prefer.

The Lord says He will instruct and teach us the way we should go, meaning He will not only give us instructions but also teach us how to obey and follow them to achieve godly goals.

As believers, we must be sensitive to the Lord’s leading and instructions, because Godly direction is for those who walk by trust and faith in God, not by their own understanding according to Proverbs 3:5-6.

Stubbornness or rebellion is a barrier to accessing divine direction. A stubborn horse or dog that refuses to obey its master’s guidance is headed for trouble. The Lord knows the destination and the terrain, so allowing Him to lead is putting ourselves in the hands of the only One who is sure-footed to carry us all the way.

Let your faith support your walk as you seek the direction the Lord has planned for you.

PRAYER: Father, help me to always follow the direction and instructions You give, and to never resist Your leading. In Jesus’ name, amen.
