I’M TOO BUSY!
Luke 10:36-42 TLB
"Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor
to the bandits' victim?" [37] The man replied, "The one who showed
him some pity." Then Jesus said, "Yes, now go and do the same."
[38] As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem they came
to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. [39] Her
sister Mary sat on the floor, listening to Jesus as he talked. [40] But Martha
was the jittery type and was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing.
She came to Jesus and said, "Sir, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my
sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help
me." [41] But the Lord said to her, "Martha, dear friend, you are so
upset over all these details! [42] There is really only one thing worth being
concerned about. Mary has discovered it-and I won't take it away from
her!"
“I’m busy! I’m too busy! I don’t have the time!”—these words
sound familiar, don’t they? We live in a supersonic society, obsessed with
busyness and instant results. Despite all our speed and technology, we find
ourselves more hurried than any generation before us, yet we’re also becoming
more self-centred and entitled.
Our busyness has made us neglect basic decency and
compassion. Galatians 6:2 calls us to bear one another’s burdens, but we’re
often too busy. Jesus commands us in Matthew 22:39 to love others as ourselves,
but we rarely find ourselves too busy to care for our own needs. We’ve drifted
into the “Cain syndrome” of Genesis 4:9, asking, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” As
a nation and as believers, this is a troubling trend—being too busy to care for
others yet expecting others to care for us.
Everyone has the same twenty-four hours in a day. No one has
more or less time, yet we often wish for more, even though we may not be good
stewards of the time we already have. We feel overwhelmed by endless
tasks—school runs, activities, shopping, housekeeping—moving robotically from
one thing to the next. In the process, we lose touch with what really matters:
relationships, compassion, and connection.
Are you too busy for leisure, for loved ones, for visiting
the sick, orphans, and widows, or even to rest? Some of us are so busy, we’ve
become too busy even for the Lord to minister to us or use us to minister to
others. Sometimes, we’re too busy for the very people God has sent us to help.
When we become too busy, we start to look like Martha in Luke
10:38-42—distracted by many tasks, neglecting what is truly important. If we’re
honest, we often resemble Martha more than Mary. We rush around doing what
“needs to be done,” missing precious moments with Jesus, friends, and family.
Yet, Jesus said, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away
from her.” Those memories and relationships are treasures that last.
Making time for anything is intentional. Recognize that
making time for God is a choice, just like all the other choices we make daily.
We make time for what’s truly important to us. Why not make time for what’s
important to the Lord? Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” according to
Matthew 6:33.
No matter how busy we are, we must start small and simple in
making the effort to serve others with our gifts, time and talent. We can set
aside just 10 minutes a day for God. For example, spend 5 minutes in the
morning and 5 minutes at night reading your Bible and praying. Set times weekly
or daily checking on loved. Even short, consistent moments can have a big
impact.
James 1:26-27 describes true religion as caring for orphans
and widows in their distress. Jesus teaches in Matthew 25:40 that genuine faith
is shown in how we treat those in need. Sadly, busyness often keeps us from
living this out.
Making time for Jesus—even when life feels overwhelming—is
not only possible, but essential for spiritual growth, peace, and purpose. Here
are practical, biblically grounded steps to help you keep Christ at the centre,
no matter how busy you are.
People need to experience God’s love through us. We find time
for social media, TV, and entertainment, yet struggle to spare a few minutes to
show Jesus to others. Christ is never too busy for us—how can we be too busy
for His people? We must learn to carry each other’s burdens and ensure we’re
not making life heavier for anyone. Let’s not be too busy to lend a hand.
PRAYER: Father, help me to be conscious of my activities and
to wisely choose those things that are beneficial and rewarding, in line with
Your will and purpose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
