JESUS THE EMPATHIZER!
Hebrews 4:14-16 TLB
But Jesus the Son of God is
our great High Priest who has gone to heaven itself to help us; therefore let
us never stop trusting him. [15] This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses since he had the same temptations we do, though he never once gave
way to them and sinned. [16] So let us come boldly to the very throne of God
and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our times
of need.
Empathy means understanding
and sharing the feelings of another—being able to relate to someone’s suffering
because you have walked in their shoes. Jesus Christ is our perfect empathizer:
as our High Priest, He is fully involved in all we experience and feels exactly
what we feel.
Few people truly empathize
with others, often because they don’t know how or lack interest in others’
struggles. When we share our burdens, people may say, “You don’t understand,”
or “You can’t imagine what I’m going through.” But there is One who not only
knows how you feel, but truly understands, appreciates, and has walked the path
before you—Jesus. As Hebrews 7:26, Isaiah 53:3-5, and 2 Corinthians 5:21
affirm, He experienced everything we do, and more.
Jesus felt, saw, and
understood every human limitation. He experienced weariness, disappointment,
and intense pain. He dealt with betrayal (Judas), denial (Peter), and constant
opposition from religious leaders. Whatever we face, Jesus has faced even more,
so He can fully empathize and sympathize with us.
He was tempted in every way,
just as we are, yet without sin. His humanity was tested, but His divine nature
remained uncorrupted—He did not sin, as 1 John 3:5 states. This proves that,
even in His humanity, Jesus remained God the Son. Though born of a woman, He
did not carry the corruptible seed of sin.
When we fall into temptation
and turn away from God, Jesus calls us to come boldly to His throne of grace.
Instead of withdrawing from God in times of suffering, persecution, or
affliction, we are invited to approach Him with humble confidence, trusting in
His mercy and compassion. He not only understands and feels our pain, but is
waiting, willing, and eager to help, save, and deliver us.
As our High Priest, Jesus
made reconciliation for our sins—not to prove His sinlessness, but to help us
out of our struggles. When we feel misunderstood and alone, we can remember
that Jesus experienced every emotion and suffering we do.
Jesus’ empathy profoundly
shapes how you can relate to others’ suffering, both as a comfort for your own
pain and as a model for how to love others well.
Jesus’ Empathy means he experiences
with us everything we do. Jesus doesn’t just feel for us—He feels with us. As
Hebrews 4:15 says, He is our High Priest who understands our weaknesses because
He faced every kind of trial and suffering, we do, yet without sin. He entered
the full experience of human pain, loneliness, betrayal, temptation, and grief.
This means when you suffer, you are never alone; Jesus truly understands what
you’re going through and stands with you in it.
Jesus’ empathy is not
passive. In the story of the bent-over woman (Luke 13:10-17), Jesus noticed her
suffering, understood the depth of her pain, and took initiative to bring
healing. His empathy led Him to act, not just to feel. This sets a pattern for
believers: true empathy compels us to care and respond to others’ pain, not
just acknowledge it
A throne of grace awaits us.
We must approach it boldly, calling out to God for mercy. We can speak freely
to our Maker, without fear, knowing that we cannot overcome our struggles
without His help and the strength that comes from His Word.
Growing in Empathy is a
choice and a skill we can nurture. Following Jesus’ model means trying to
understand others, being observant, and responding to their needs with
compassion and presence.
PRAYER: Lord, thank You that
I can come to You, knowing You understand all I go through. I am blessed
because Your compassion never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
