PIDGIN FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT

“Familiarity breeds contempt” mean say, as you dey close to person or thing, especially when you sabi their wahala or weakness, you fit begin lose respect or admiration for them. When you too dey used to person or something, you fit stop to appreciate them. For example, person fit dey admire celebrity from far, but if dem work together and see the person bad habits, the respect fit disappear. Even for relationship, if two people dey always together without boundary, dem fit begin take each other for granted.

For Bible side, “familiarity breeds contempt” mean say, when people too dey used to person or something, dem fit lose respect or value for am—even reach level of rejection or insult. The exact words no dey Bible, but the idea show for many Bible stories, especially for Jesus life.

One clear example na when Jesus go Him hometown, Nazareth. The people wey grow with am no fit accept am as authority or as Son of God because dem too sabi Him background and family.

This na how familiarity dey work: “No be you? We sabi your papa, your mama, we see you grow, we know your mistake, we dey your area.” Even when dem see the wisdom and miracle wey Jesus do, dem still call am “carpenter pikin.” Their familiarity make dem insult and reject am.

Even after Israelites see plenty miracle from God, dem still dey take God presence for granted and even dey disrespect am (Numbers 14:11). 

Michal, David wife, despise David (and God join) when she see am dey worship God with full heart, maybe because she too sabi David weakness and past (2 Samuel 6:16, 20-23).

Bible dey warn make we no dey take God, Him word, or the people wey God send for granted just because we dey used to them. E dey tell us make we dey respect, honour, and dey grateful, especially for things and people wey dey close to us, so we no go miss God blessing or message because we don dey too used to them.

We suppose guard ourself make we no lose respect for God because of over-familiarity. Romans 12:2 talk say make we dey renew our mind with God word—make we dey meditate on Scripture, no just dey read am anyhow, but with fresh and open heart. Make God word dey challenge, correct, and inspire us. This one go keep our relationship with God fresh and no go let our heart dey dull or hard because of routine. Joshua 1:8 talk say make we dey meditate on the word day and night so we go get success and spiritual health

Proverbs 25:17 talk say, “No dey always waka go your neighbour house—if you too show face, dem fit begin hate you.” 

This one show say if you dey too expose yourself—even with good things or people—e fit make people lose respect or even dey vex. Over-familiarity na real spiritual danger.

Even 2 Corinthians 5:16 warn us about over-familiarity. E teach say make we no dey take holy things, miracle, or people wey God dey use for granted, so we no go miss God work or disrespect wetin really get value.

PRAYER: Baba God, abeg help me make I no dey too familiar with people reach the point wey I go dey look them anyhow, so I no go miss the blessing wey dey from my relationship with them. Make my heart dey full of respect, gratitude, and honour, in Jesus name. Amen.
