THE LORD DON'T BUILD ON YOUR FOUNDATIONS.
Psalm 127:1-2 TLB
Unless the Lord builds a
house, the builders' work is useless. Unless the Lord protects a city, sentries
do no good. [2] It is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning
until late at night, fearing you will starve to death; for God wants his loved
ones to get their proper rest.
Foundation! Buildings and
foundations!
What are you building, and
what are you building on? What’s your foundation made of? The Bible talks about
foundations both literally and metaphorically, often using the concept to teach
deep spiritual truths.
Psalm 127:1-2 teaches that
unless God is the one building or establishing something, human efforts and
foundations are ultimately futile. God does not simply build on human
foundations or plans—His will and purpose must be the true foundation. This
principle is echoed throughout scripture, emphasizing God’s sovereignty in
building and establishing lives, not relying on human plans or efforts.
God is the Ultimate
Foundation.
Isaiah 28:16 says, “So this
is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a
precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never
be stricken with panic.’” This points prophetically to Jesus Christ as the
cornerstone of our faith.
Christ is indeed the
cornerstone, essential to all true building. We can never build anything
sustainable or lasting if we build outside of God’s foundation. God does not
sustain what He did not start. If it’s not His foundation, He is not
responsible for maintaining it. As 1 Corinthians 3:11 says, “For no one can lay
any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Christ the cornerstone is
the most stable foundation we can build on. According to Paul, Christ is the
only true foundation for the Christian life.
What are you building?
Is the Lord building with
you and through you? If the Lord is not building with you, it’s only a matter
of time before the building collapses. Building on a solid foundation is
crucial for the durability of any structure. Jesus teaches in Matthew 7:24-25,
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice
is like a wise man who built his house on the rock...” Obedience to Christ’s
words is like building on a solid foundation that can withstand life’s storms.
Builders must work hard, and
watchmen must stay alert, but their efforts must be grounded in faith, trusting
God to make their work fruitful. Psalm 127 promotes diligence, but not from a
place of greed or anxious striving (see Proverbs 23:4–5).
If our foundation is not set
on the Lord—on Christ, the cornerstone—anything can happen to it; it will
eventually crumble. Psalm 11:3 says, “When the foundations are being destroyed,
what can the righteous do?” When the foundation is faulty and godless, the
collapse of moral or societal order is inevitable.
What is your foundation?
Do you have a solid
spiritual foundation? Many work hard to secure a financial foundation for their
families but neglect the far more important spiritual foundation. In Job 38:4,
God reminds Job—and us—of His power as Creator, the One who laid the earth’s
foundations and sustains all things.
Samuel John Stone’s hymn,
“The Church’s One Foundation,” captures this truth:
The Church’s one foundation
is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is His new creation, by
water and the word:
from heaven He came and
sought her to be His holy bride;
with His own blood He bought
her, and for her life He died.
The Church and its apostolic
foundation is Christ. The Church is built on the teachings of the apostles,
with Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). Build on the cornerstone, not
on yourself.
PRAYER: Lord, thank You for
being my cornerstone. Help me to build on the unshakable and unbreakable
foundation that is Christ Jesus. Amen.
