BRINGING DEAD THINGS TO LIFE!
Ezekiel 37:1-14 BSB
The hand of the LORD was
upon me, and He brought me out by His Spirit and set me down in the middle of
the valley, and it was full of bones. [2] He led me all around among them, and
I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, and indeed, they were very
dry. [3] Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord
GOD,” I replied, “only You know.” [4] And He said to me, “Prophesy concerning
these bones and tell them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! [5] This is
what the Lord GOD says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and
you will come to life. [6] I will attach tendons to you and make flesh grow
upon you and cover you with skin. I will put breath within you so that you will
come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’” [7] So I prophesied as I
had been commanded. And as I prophesied, there was suddenly a noise, a
rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone. [8] As I looked on,
tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them; but there was no
breath in them. [9] Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son
of man, and tell the breath that this is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the
four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, so that they may live!”
[10] So I prophesied as He had commanded me, and the breath entered them, and
they came to life and stood on their feet—a vast army. [11] Then He said to me,
“Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying,
‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’ [12]
Therefore prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O My
people, I will open your graves and bring you up from them, and I will bring
you back to the land of Israel. [13] Then you, My people, will know that I am
the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. [14] I will put
My Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land.
Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it, declares
the LORD.’”
God has unique power over
life and death! The word of God, according to John 6:63, is spirit and life;
that means it has within itself the power to bring dead things to life. The
word of God is potent and transformative, able on one hand to make a change and
have a permanent effect.
The Bible contains numerous
accounts where God, directly or through His prophets and Jesus, brings the
physically dead back to life. The most notable example is the resurrection of
Lazarus in John 11:25-26. Jesus demonstrated His authority over death and His
identity as "the resurrection and the life."
He’s Jesus, that’s why He
could do that! Yes, He is, but what about our text?
Jesus wasn’t there, but the
Holy Spirit was. He was fully involved and demonstrated the power and potency
of the word of God.
The widow of Nain’s son in
Luke 7:11–17 was brought back to life by just the command of the word.
The resurrection of Jesus is
the central event of the New Testament, described as the ultimate victory over
death and the guarantee of future resurrection for believers. Paul emphasizes
that Christ's resurrection is the "first fruits" of those who will be
raised, connecting Jesus’s resurrection to the eventual resurrection of all who
belong to Him.
Our text presents the vision
of the valley of dry bones, where God commands the prophet Ezekiel to prophesy
to lifeless bones, which then come together, receive flesh, and are filled with
breath, coming to life as a great army. This vision symbolizes God's power to
restore and revive not only individuals but entire communities or nations,
especially Israel.
The passage uses the Hebrew
word ruach, meaning both "breath" and "spirit,"
highlighting the idea that God’s Spirit is the source of life and renewal and
God’s sovereignty over life and death. Several passages in the Bible affirm
that God alone has the authority to give and restore life:
Deuteronomy 32:39: "I
kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver
from My hand."
1 Samuel 2:6: "The LORD
gives both death and life; he brings some down to the grave but raises others
up."
Romans 4:17 describes God as
the one "who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things
that do not exist," underscoring His creative and restorative power.
The Bible also speaks of
spiritual resurrection—bringing spiritually dead people to life through faith
in Christ. Jesus’s statement, "Whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet
shall he live," points to both physical resurrection and the promise of
eternal life for believers.
The resurrection motif
extends to the transformation of hopeless or "dead" situations, where
God’s intervention brings renewal, hope, and restoration.
What perceived dead
situation are you facing right now? Have faith and hope; the God that brings
life to dead things can breathe life into that thing if you ask in faith.
John 11, Luke 7, and 1 Kings
17 give examples of literal resurrection, proof that God can physically raise
the dead.
Our text assures us that God
restores and revives nations and communities. There are communities desperate
for God’s intervention right now but are unwilling to turn to Him for life
because of social ignorance and rejection of the Lord.
We know and are confidently
assured that only God can revive helplessly dead situations and breathe hopeful
life into everything. Even Romans 4:17 attests to the truth that only God gives
life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
What dead thing are you
trusting God to bring back to life? Don’t give up! Don’t let go! Hold on and
trust God once more to breathe life and bring those dead things to life.
PRAYER: Father Lord and
giver of life, breathe life into every area of my life that requires
resuscitation and revival in Jesus’ name. Amen.
