BY-PRODUCT!
Matthew 6:33 AMPC
But seek ( aim at and strive
after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and
being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you
besides.
A by-product, or byproduct,
is a secondary product that results incidentally from a production process,
manufacturing procedure, or chemical reaction. It is not the primary product
being sought by that process, but it can still have value and uses.
Biblically, by-products are
the natural, God-given results of prioritizing faith, obedience, and spiritual
focus. Instead of chasing after blessings or rewards directly, Scripture
encourages believers to seek God first—allowing the by-products of transformation,
unity, and fruitfulness to follow. From a biblical perspective, a byproduct can
be understood as something that naturally results or flows from a primary
action, decision, or spiritual principle—even though it may not be the main
goal.
In life, we often chase
results—success, peace, provision, influence. But in the kingdom of God, many
of these blessings are not the goal—they are the by-products of a deeper
pursuit: knowing and obeying God. The core purpose of Jesus’s coming is the salvation
of souls. However, secondary blessings naturally result from accepting and
living out this salvation.
Usually, a reward is the
by-product of what we focused on. When we focus on the main thing and
prioritize what is needed above what is wanted—e.g., our relationship with God
above all—positive by-products flow into every area of life.
Hebrews 6:9 references
“things that accompany salvation,” highlighting that good works, changed
relationships, and inner transformation emerge as by-products of genuine faith.
A by-product is not always
the main goal but is an extra that comes through other activities, actions, and
plans. This is a way God has made all things in nature produce and go further
or last longer than they normally would. Almost everything in life is a
by-product of something.
For instance, in
agriculture, by-products are the non-primary goods produced from farming
operations, often viewed as waste or leftovers, from the process of cultivating
crops and rearing livestock. As you would expect, these by-products encompass a
wide range of materials including straw, husks, plant stalks, skins, shells,
and inedible parts of plants and fruits that end up being used for something
else.
Isaiah 32:17 declares that
the by-product of righteous living is peace, stating that “The fruit of
righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and
confidence forever.”
There is a by-product to
everything we do. As Galatians 6:7 states, we reap whatever we sow. Some of the
challenges, trials, and afflictions we face daily are by-products of our
yesterdays.
As commanded and promised in
Deuteronomy 28:1-14, blessings (all kinds) are a by-product of obedience. We
are blessed in health, family, work, and land if we live and walk in obedience
to God’s commands.
Wisdom is the principal
thing in life according to Proverbs 4:7; this wisdom in turn produces long life
and peace according to Proverbs 3:16–17. So, get wisdom; it comes with so many
by-products.
Just as sin produces death
according to Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death...” implying that
spiritual death and separation from God is the by-product of sinful living,
while the sacrificial death and resurrection of Christ is the gift of God that
produces eternal life.
None of us like to suffer,
but suffer we must, as stated throughout Scripture, because suffering produces
character according to Romans 5:3–4: “Suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
Jesus in John 15:5 teaches
that fruitfulness is a by-product of abiding in Him: if you remain in Christ,
you will “bear much fruit.” This fruit includes qualities such as love, joy,
and peace—not as the believer’s main goal, but as blessings that overflow from
relationship with God.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What are you currently
pursuing, God Himself, or the by-products of a godly life?
- Are there areas where
you’ve been frustrated, not realizing the blessing you seek is a result of
deeper obedience?
- How can you shift your
focus from outcomes to intimacy with God?
PRAYER: Father, help me to
seek You above all else. Teach me to trust, obey, and walk closely with You—not
for what I can get, but because You are worthy. Let the fruit of my life be the
natural overflow of a heart rooted in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
