FRAGRANCE OF GRACE
Numbers 6:25 AMPC
The Lord make His face to
shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor)
to you;
Grace occurs seventy times
in the Scriptures, with the predominant meanings of favour, and as an
indication of the free and unconditional granting of God’s blessings on people
who may not necessarily deserve them.
God’s fragrance is
characterized by His kindness and warm courtesy to His children, bestowing
favours on us even when we don’t naturally qualify for them.
The fragrance of grace means
the sweet influence or effect of God’s grace in a person’s life, which others
can sense—just like a pleasant smell fills a room. In the Bible, “fragrance” or
“aroma” often describes something pleasing to God, like a sacrifice or offering
that brings Him joy.
Acts 10:34 tells us that God
is no respecter of persons; what He does for one, He will do for others.
God’s fragrance of grace is
what shines through and “smells” on us to show the world God’s grace at work in
our lives.
There’s a grace bestowed on
us all according to 1 Peter 4:10, to release the glory of God. It is the grace
that repairs broken walls, redeems the lost, and releases us from bondage.
God’s fragrance of grace
makes us look good without any personal input or effort on our part.
The same grace God gave the
Israelites of old, He has given to every believer. His grace preserves us.
Grace causes His face to shine on us and be gracious to us. Grace lifts His
face upon us and allows us to prosper.
Sin put a curse on humanity,
but grace redeemed and beautified us.
Our countenance is the way
we look, so when people look at us, what do they see? Do they see something
different, or do they see grace?
Moses’s countenance shone
with grace in Exodus 34:30. When he was in God’s presence, God’s fragrance of
grace was poured on him. When God’s fragrance of grace is poured into us, our
faces never reveal what we have experienced in our closets when we step out.
The fragrance of grace
poured on Stephen in Acts 6:15 sustained him while he was being stoned to
death, and he could still pray for the forgiveness of his killers. The
fragrance of grace released the glory of God on Stephen.
God graces us for whatever
we are facing, and the fragrance of grace will cover whatever the enemy intends
for us. Like the fragrance of grace poured out on the three Hebrew boys in
Daniel 3—even when we come out of the fire, we won’t smell of smoke like
them.
They smelt of grace instead
of smoke. Just as a sweet smell lingers, the effect of God’s grace in our lives
can leave a lasting, positive impact on others.
I can personally vouch and
confirm that when we allow the fragrance of grace to be poured over us, it
shows and “smells” on us; when people interact with us, they catch the scent of
God’s compassion and forgiveness—they experience His grace in real ways,
because God’s grace is as tangible as any fragrance we put on.
God poured the fragrance of
His grace on us; it covers the despair that wouldn’t give Him glory.
To receive the outpouring of
God’s fragrance of grace, we must approach His throne boldly according to
Hebrews 4:16, believing that what He’s done for others, He’s willing and ready
to do for you.
As Isaiah 30:18 says, He is
longingly waiting and expecting to be gracious to us, to pour on us the
fragrance of grace that will glorify Him.
If you’re wondering if God
will do those things you’ve asked of Him—because you think they are too big,
unimaginable, or impossible—remember, He’s done them before and is waiting to
pour out the fragrance of grace to make you look and “smell” graceful.
PRAYER: Father, help me live
out Your love and grace, that others may be drawn to You through me, to see
Christ’s life and love shining through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
