GOD’S WATCHMAN!

Ezekiel 3:17 AMPC

Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at My mouth and give them warning from Me.

Most homes and industries that can afford it have watchmen—people assigned to keep an eye on their property, protecting it from theft and vandalism. The Bible describes God’s watchman as someone appointed to stand guard—physically or spiritually—over God’s people, with the solemn duty of vigilance, warning, and responsibility.

God’s watchman is a guard responsible for protecting their station from surprise enemy attacks and other potential dangers. Ancient Israelite cities often stationed watchmen on high walls or in watchtowers. Their job was to keep watch and warn the townspeople of impending threats. The watchman leans forward, training their eyes on what can be seen from the tower of their high position.

God appoints believers to be watchmen over the land, wherever they find themselves. People depended on the watchman to remain spiritually vigilant and sound the alarm if the city was in danger.

God’s watchmen can’t afford to fall asleep on the job, because the people rely on them to warn of impending danger, guard against sin, and warn of coming judgment.

In ancient Israel, watchmen were stationed on city walls, towers, or fields, tasked with spotting danger—like invading armies or thieves—and sounding the alarm, as seen in 2 Kings 9:17 and Isaiah 21:6–8.

The Hebrew word for watchman, tsaphah, means “to look out” or “keep watch,” and keeping watch for God is what every believer ought to be doing.

God appointed prophets as watchmen—not just to guard physically, but to warn God’s people spiritually.

In essence, God’s watchman is a guard, a guide, a vigilant and observant person, a keeper of the Lord’s instructions, and a watcher.

We need more of God’s watchmen now more than ever. According to Isaiah 62:6, God sets watchmen on the wall to keep watch day and night without rest.

Watchmen are needed to guard, keep, and guide the flock, the heart, the city, and the nation from ungodly outside influence and attack.

As God’s watchman, you must know your post and remain there—be alert to sound the horn. We see a good example of a watchman at his post in 2 Samuel 18:24–27. Our duty as watchmen is to keep watch at the gate.

God may have called you to be a watchman in a specific post, which means you are to prophetically guide, tend the entrance of the gate or city, and protect from danger.

A watchman must be a person of prayer—someone who surrounds others with a divine wall of protection and reseals the broken gaps in the hedge through which the enemy can break in with satanic assault, attacks, and warfare.

It is then up to the people to decide whether to heed or ignore these warnings.

I like to say we are God’s secret agents—His special forces and spiritual spies—who look out and watch what’s going on in the land to take authority over anything unacceptable, according to Matthew 18:18.

God appointed prophets as spiritual watchmen over the souls of His people. They are referred to as the “Son of man,” whom God has made watchmen for His people, so that His word would be heard as a warning through the prophets, as seen in Ezekiel 33:7 and Hosea 9:8.

The Lord has set church, spiritual, and ministry leaders as His watchmen for this age. As Hebrews 13:17 states, we should obey our spiritual leaders and do what they say—within the context of God’s Word and kingdom principles. The watchman’s work is to watch over our souls and give account to God.

A disobedient and blind watchman may leave his post, exposing the people he was called to protect to danger and suffering, according to Isaiah 56:10. Obedience is the only course of action for a true watchman.

God’s watchman, stay on your tower and never leave your post.

PRAYER: Lord God, thank You for appointing me as Your watchman to spiritually guard and intercede for Your people. Help me to be vigilant to warn, steadfast to pray, and obedient to speak Your truth for the protection and well-being of Your people, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
