HAVE FUN!
Romans 14:17-19 TLB
For, after all, the
important thing for us as Christians is not what we eat or drink but stirring
up goodness and peace and joy from the Holy Spirit. [18] If you let Christ be
Lord in these affairs, God will be glad; and so, will others. [19] In this way
aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.
I honestly don’t know how it
came about that Christianity is boring or that Christians shouldn’t have fun
while following Christ. It seems to be an accepted law that once you receive
salvation, you no longer can have fun, laughter, or any sort of merriment.
Where did it come from?
Joy and fun, as God
intended, are important parts of celebration because they lift our spirits and
help us see the beauty and meaning in life. Having fun and enjoying life are
part of God's good design for us, if it is done with gratitude, joy, and in alignment
with His purposes.
We know of, or were that
person who was fun to be around, full of cheer, laughter and cheeky (not in a
bad way) before salvation but once they or you got born again, it was as if the
light bulb of fun was switched off. They stopped laughing, stopped having fun
and essentially stopped enjoying the things the Lord gave them to enjoy.
Everything in life doesn’t
always have to be serious for it to be important or spiritual.
The Lord our God has a sense
of humour, otherwise He wouldn’t have added it to our make-up. You scarcely can
read the Bible and not find something funny that triggers your laughter, joy,
and fun. God’s sense of humour was evident in several passages of the Bible,
like the story of Balaam’s donkey speaking in Numbers 22 or Elijah mocking the
prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18. These moments suggest that God has wit or
irony.
We can live a holy life and
still have fun. God measures holiness by how quick we are to obey Him and not
in how sombre we look and sound.
Joy and celebration are
God-given according to Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, “I know that there is nothing
better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of
them may eat and drink and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift
of God.” While Psalm 126:2 says, “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our
tongues with songs of joy.” These show that enjoying life is not only
allowed—it’s a gift from God that we must cherish and enjoy.
There’s too much sadness,
heartache, pain, and frustration in the world for us to intentionally withhold
ourselves from having a few laughs. In fact, the Bible emphasizes that laughter
is beneficial for health and well-being as seen in Proverbs 17:22: "A
joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
Proverbs 15:13: "A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of
heart the spirit is crushed." And Proverbs 3:7-8: "It will be healing
to your flesh and refreshment to your bones."
This highlights the positive
impact of laughter and joy on our physical and emotional health.
Ecclesiastes 9:7 encourages
us to enjoy the simple things, like meals and fellowship, recognizing these as
blessings God provides. We can have fun with friends, family, and colleagues by
sitting down to a meal with good, clean and wholesome talk, discussions, and
jokes.
The command in Psalm 118:24
is clear. Rejoice and be glad in the day God has made, for this is the day the
Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Joy and gladness are biblical
responses to life and not a show of spirituality.
Even Jesus enjoyed fun and
fellowship, he often spent time at meals, weddings, and gatherings. His first
miracle was at a wedding feast in Cana in John 2, where He turned water into
wine—an act that helped the celebration continue.
Stop taking everything too
seriously. Stop criticizing those having godly fun. Let down your hair and try
having fun, who knows, you might like it.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What does fun mean to me,
and how do I usually experience it?
- Do I make space in my life
for rest, celebration, and gratitude as God commands?
- Are the ways I have fun
aligned with my values and faith?
- What are some simple,
God-honouring ways I can enjoy life more fully this week?
PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for the gift of life and the joy and for creating laughter,
music, beauty, and celebration. You have placed joy in our hearts as a
reflection of Your goodness. Help me to embrace the moments of fun and rest as
sacred, knowing that You are present in both the quiet and the joyful noise in
Jesus’ name, amen.
