SCARS AND CROWNS
James 1:12 TLB
Happy is the man who doesn't
give in and do wrong when he is tempted, for afterwards he will get as his
reward the crown of life that God has promised those who love him.
Medically speaking, scars
are areas of fibrous tissue that form as part of the body’s natural healing
process after the skin or other tissues are injured. When the deeper layers of
the skin are damaged—by cuts, burns, surgery, infections, or inflammation—the
body repairs the wound by producing new tissue made primarily of collagen.
From a scriptural
perspective, scars are seen as symbols of both suffering and redemption. The
most significant biblical reference to scars is found in the story of Jesus’
crucifixion and resurrection. After rising from the dead, Jesus showed His
disciples the scars on His hands and side as proof of His identity and the
reality of His sacrifice according to John 20:27.
There are scars, and there
are scars. Some are visible, some not; some physical, some mental—but scars,
regardless. Some scars are accidental, some intentionally inflicted, some by
oneself, and others by other people.
Scars could be a badge of
honour or a symbol of shame.
They could be evidence of
sacrifice or a crown of victory.
Jesus’ scars are a deeply
meaningful and symbolic topic in the Christian faith. The scars of Jesus refer
to the wounds received during His crucifixion, particularly:
- The nail marks in His
hands and feet
- The spear wound in His
side
- The scourging wounds from
being whipped
- And possibly marks from
the Crown of Thorns. These are Jesus’ sacrificial scars.
Scars can mean different
things for different people.
- Physical scars are visible
marks left after an injury, surgery, or skin condition.
- Emotional or psychological
scars refer to emotional pain or trauma that leaves a lasting impact on the
heart or mind.
- Symbolic or spiritual
scars symbolize survival, resilience, or transformation.
Do you have scars? What type
do you have, and how did you get them?
No matter! The crowns gained
from life’s scars are the most precious to display. The laurel wreath given to
winners in athletic games, as seen in 1 Corinthians 9:25, and to victorious
emperors, is evidence that they went through the rigours of training to gain
the scars that brought them victory. The reward for faithful endurance is
eternal life and its blessings, according to Revelation 2:10.
In Galatians 6:17, Paul
insists on what he calls the marks of Jesus that resulted from his being
persecuted. These scars he received from all the afflictions mentioned in 2
Corinthians 11:23–27—scars that became crowns of testimony.
How about you? Have you got
battle scars to display for Christ?
Or maybe your scars are from
before Christ, within Christ, or from others?
2 Timothy 4:8 assures us
that there’s a crown waiting for everyone who finishes well and strong—a crown
that will overshadow every pain that gave scars and override the scars.
1 Peter 5:4 tells us that a
crown of glory has been reserved for us. God beautifies our journey with grace
and glory. Each time we strive to honour Him in our lives, we are not just
living for ourselves but embodying the glory that He bestows upon us. These
crowns are a reminder of His promises to us and the recognition of our
faithfulness to His calling. Let’s continue to glorify Him through our actions
and thoughts as we anticipate the day He adorns us with His crowns of glory.
Don’t allow the scars from
life’s battles to define you but let the crown of glory beautify you. No matter
what, do not, according to Revelation 3:11, let anyone take your crown from
you.
Do not allow the pains of
disappointments, betrayals, bereavement, ignorance, or disobedience to rob you
of your crown. Don’t hold on to the scars of life as badges of honour, so that
you’ll be free to accept your crowns. Above all, don’t allow these scars to
push you to give up, so you don’t lose your reward as stated in Hebrews 10:35.
PRAYER: Lord God may my
scars not be marks of shame, but evidence of healing, redemption, and Your
enduring love for me. May they be a reminder that, through Christ, even wounds
can be transformed into sources of hope and testimony. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
