SWING THE SICKLE!
Revelation 14:18 TLB
Just then the angel who has
power to destroy the world with fire, shouted to the angel with the sickle,
"Use your sickle now to cut off the clusters of grapes from the vines of
the earth, for they are fully ripe for judgment."
Swinging the sickle means
the harvest is ripe and ready to be brought in. This means we must not only be
prepared to swing, but also have the strength, wisdom, and discernment to know
where and when to swing.
Joel 3:13 says: “Swing the
sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is
full; the vats overflow, because their wickedness is great.” Calling the mighty
ones, God’s agents—to carry out judgment because the wickedness of the nations
has reached its full measure.
Our text in Revelation
describes a vision of the Son of Man with a sharp sickle, ready to reap the
earth’s harvest. This symbolizes the final judgment and the separation of the
righteous from the wicked. The harvest is the time when God’s judgment is carried
out on the earth, and the sickle is the instrument used to cut down or judge
the wicked, while at the same time gathering in the righteous who are ripe for
harvest.
Swinging the sickle requires
forceful, decisive action. It implies readiness, obedience, and a willingness
to act in God’s timing to bring in the harvest for His kingdom.
Jesus said in Matthew 9:37
and John 4:35 that the harvest is plentiful. The sight of the crowds moved Him
with compassion and spoke of fields that were ripe and ready: Ready to hear the
gospel! Ready to be led to Christ! Ready to receive salvation! Ready to be
discipled! But the question remains: Is anyone holding the sickle to reap the
harvest?
The Lord of the harvest is
calling and sending forth labourers. Will you be part of it? Will you answer
His call and take up the sickle of His Word?
Recently, over 5,000 people
responded to the altar call at the Franklin Graham “God Loves You” London tour
because Evangelist Franklin boldly swung the sickle of the Word. Imagine that
bountiful harvest—where all the hard work of planting and nurturing comes to
fruition. Just like the earth yielding its produce, our actions in life also
have consequences.
Many of these souls had
probably been hearing the Word for a while, but this was the appointed day and
time when the sickle was swung, and they finally responded to God’s call.
Galatians 6:7 reminds us not
be deceived because we reap what we sow.
This principle applies to
every area of our lives. Our choices and behaviour plant seeds that will
eventually yield a harvest—good or bad. This encourages us to sow kindness,
righteousness, and the Word of God, knowing these actions will bring forth a
good return. Sow only what you desire to reap.
When we sow the Word, we
reap souls for Christ. The Word of God is the sickle we swing to gather in the
harvest. Harvest is an important biblical theme, symbolizing the rewards of our
labour, spiritual growth, and God’s blessings. Just as farmers gather crops
after a long growing season, God calls us to gather spiritual fruit in our
lives and in the lives of others.
Are you swinging the sickle
wherever you are—at work, at home, in your community? The Lord’s harvest is
always twofold: The saints (God’s redeemed, the righteous) and the sinners (the
workers of wickedness and unrighteousness).
The reaping is to reward
those due a reward and to punish those who qualify for judgment. Which will you
be? Which sickle are you holding—to reap in God’s righteous harvest or to judge
and punish the wicked?
God is calling you to
action. The time for waiting is over; the harvest is ready. Don’t let fear,
doubt, or complacency stop you from swinging the sickle. Souls are waiting,
destinies are hanging in the balance, and God is depending on you to be His labourer
in the field.
To seeing the sickle, pray
for discernment to know where the harvest is ripe around you. And be ready with
the Word to share at every opportunity. Step out in faith and move with
boldness and compassion.
The harvest is too great for
one person; partner with others in the body of Christ and trust God’s timing:
Sometimes the harvest takes time—be patient and persistent. But remember, the
harvest is not just about numbers, but about souls—lives transformed for
eternity. Every effort, every prayer, every word sown in faith will bring forth
a harvest in due season.
PRAYER: Lord of the harvest,
help me to diligently and wisely swing my sickle to bring in whatever harvest
you require of me. Give me the courage, strength, and wisdom to act in your
timing and to see the opportunities you place before me. May I be faithful in sowing,
reaping, and discipling for your kingdom, in Jesus’s name. Amen.
