TWISTED TRUTH!
Jeremiah 10:10-16 AMPC
But the Lord is the true God
and the God of truth (the God Who is Truth). He is the living God and the
everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations are not able
to bear His indignation. [11] Thus shall you say to them: The gods, who did not
make the heavens and the earth, shall perish from the earth and from under the
heavens. [12] God made the earth by His power; He established the world by His
wisdom and by His understanding and skill stretched out the heavens. [13] When
He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes
the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the
rain and brings forth the wind out from His treasuries and from His
storehouses. [14] Every man has become like a brute, irrational and stupid,
without knowledge [of God]; every goldsmith is brought to shame by his graven
idols; for his molten images are frauds and falsehood, and there is no breath
in them. [15] They are devoid of worth, usefulness, or truth, a work of
delusion and mockery; in their time of trial and punishment they shall
[helplessly] perish. [16] The Portion of Jacob [the true God on Whom Israel has
a claim] is not like these, for He is the Fashioner and Maker of all things,
and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance-the Lord of hosts is His name.
The Bible strongly
emphasizes truth as central to God’s character and to the life of every
believer. It teaches that God Himself is true, His Word is truth, and that
living in truth is both a calling and a pathway to freedom. Yet, in today’s
world, truth has become increasingly abstract—often reshaped to fit personal
narratives. It has been given colour, race, and tribe, and what is “true” for
one may not be so for another.
But Romans 3:4 reminds us:
“Let God be true, and every human being a liar.” Despite this, many have found
clever and even “spiritual” ways to twist God’s Word to suit their desires.
However, John 17:17 declares: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
God’s Word is not just true—it is truth, eternal and unchanging.
Truth is that which is real,
verifiable, and consistent with God’s nature. The Bible offers us not only the
knowledge of truth but also the experience of living it. Sadly, some have
falsified the truth, twisting Scripture for personal gain, ignoring 2 Peter
1:20–21, which warns that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own
interpretation.
Some claim to know the exact
date of the Lord’s return. For example, Daniel 8:14 speaks of “2,300 evenings
and mornings”—a prophecy about the cleansing of the sanctuary, not the Second
Coming. Yet William Miller interpreted this as years and predicted Christ’s
return between 1843–1844. When it didn’t happen, many were disillusioned. This
is a cautionary tale about misusing prophecy.
God helps those who help
themselves! This phrase is often quoted as if it's from the Bible. It’s not
biblical. In fact, Scripture teaches that God helps the helpless according to
Romans 5:6, Psalm 121:1–2. Salvation and grace are not earned by effort but
given freely.
Another very common one is,
sow a seed to receive a miracle! Giving money guarantees blessings or miracles.
While generosity is encouraged in 2 Corinthians 9:6–8, God’s blessings are not
for sale. This teaching can exploit people’s desperation and misrepresent God’s
character.
God is love, so He won’t
judge anyone! Really! That would God’s love cancels out His justice. God is
love says 1 John 4:8, but He is also holy and just says Romans 2:5–6. Love and
justice are not opposites—they coexist perfectly in God’s nature.
Touch not my anointed” seen
in Psalm 105:15 is used to silence criticism of church leaders. But it
originally referred to patriarchs like Abraham, not modern pastors. Leaders
should be respected, but not beyond accountability according to 1 Timothy 5:19–20.
All paths lead to God! Every
religion or belief system ultimately leads to the same God. False! Jesus said,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me” in John 14:6. The Bible presents one way to God—through Christ.
In John 9:2, the disciples
ask Jesus, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Some
twist this to support reincarnation. But the context reflects a Jewish belief
that a foetus could sin in the womb—not a belief in past lives. The Bible
teaches resurrection, not reincarnation.
2 Corinthians 12:2 is
sometimes used to support astral projection. But Paul describes a vision, not a
self-initiated spiritual journey. It was a divine experience, not a mystical
practice. Scripture offers no support for astral projection.
And in John 8:32: “Then you
will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
But it’s the truth you know
that sets you free—not someone else’s version of it.
Like the Bereans in Acts
17:11, we must search the Scriptures daily to test what we hear. Truth must be
studied, discerned, and lived—not twisted to fit our preferences.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What Scriptures have you
or others misunderstood or twisted that now seem like truth?
- Have you tested those
beliefs against the full counsel of God’s Word?
- Are you willing to unlearn
false teachings in light of biblical truth?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to
love the truth, seek the truth, and live the truth. Forgive me for the times I’ve twisted or
accepted twisted versions of Your Word and give me discernment to recognize
deception and the humility to be corrected. Make me like the Bereans—eager to
search the Scriptures and grounded in Your truth in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
