ENVIRONMENT!
Genesis 2:15 AMPC
And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of
Eden to tend and guard and keep it.
As we know, God is the creator of all nature. The human
artist expresses their personality through creativity, but it started with God
expressing His infinite glory and creativity through nature. God is the artist,
architect, painter, and flower organizer of nature—without human qualification
or consideration—but full of artistic and aesthetic beauty as described in
Psalm 19:1 and 104:24.
We are all created to share responsibility for the earth by
being good stewards of the created environment because our environment is an
expression of the person and nature of God and so should be treated with deep
respect.
So many today have abandoned the Creator and have begun to
worship the creation, the environment, according to Romans 1:25.
The first assignment God gave to Adam and all humanity was to
tend and care for the Garden of Eden, the environment. According to Genesis
1:28, we all share the responsibility for the earth by being good stewards of
the created environment.
We have groups today fighting for all kinds of causes, i.e.,
water, animals, plants, and people fighting to preserve anything they deem
necessary—not out of respect for God or because of any sense of Godly
stewardship, but mostly out of the misguided sense of stopping the extinction
of whatever they are fighting for.
Yet, like the Israelites of old, we have defiled and
desecrated the environment, as seen in Jeremiah 2:7. God gave us everything in
creation to sustain us, but some are on the extreme of either not using them or
misusing them. We have enough for both food and fuel.
We are required by God in 1 Corinthians 4:2 to faithfully
care for the environment because, according to John 1:3, all things were made
through Christ, and without Him was not anything made that was made.
The fullness of God’s creative power in and around the
universe, and especially our environment, is seen in Psalm 104:25-31: Here is
the ocean, vast and wide, teeming with life of every kind, both large and
small. See the ships sailing along, and
Leviathan, which you made to play in the sea.
They all depend on you to give them food as they need it. When you supply it, they gather it. You open
your hand to feed them, and they are richly satisfied. But if you turn away from them, they panic.
When you take away their breath, they die and turn again to dust. When you give them your breath, life is
created, and you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord continue forever! The Lord takes pleasure in
all he has made!
If the Lord takes pleasure in all He made, we, His children,
whom He made all things for, should likewise take pleasure in and care for all
He made.
We cannot worship nature, because the Creator God, not the
creation—the environment and its contents—is holy. But we must show our love
and respect for the Creator by caring for His creation as good stewards.
We haven’t and cannot create anything. God, who made all
things, is infinitely able to sustain all according to Luke 12:27-30. Some
honour the environment more than human life, but to God all are important as
seen in Isaiah 43:20-21. The weather, plants, and animals are all part of the
environment God created on earth and are as much a part of God's creation as
mankind itself.
As believers and stewards of God’s creation, we must do what
we can to ensure the care of the environment. Each of us is responsible for our
contribution to the environment and therefore must ensure we act to protect,
preserve, and respect it.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How do I personally show respect and care for God’s
creation in my daily life?
- In what ways do I struggle with prioritizing the
environment as part of my spiritual stewardship?
- How can I balance using natural resources responsibly
without either abusing or neglecting them?
- How does understanding God as the Creator change my
attitude toward the environment and my role in protecting it?
PRAYER: Father, help me to be a good steward of your
creation, of the environment, to the glory of your name in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
