FIRE IN MY MOUTH!
Jeremiah 5:14 NET
"Because of that, the
LORD, the God who rules over all, said to me, 'Because these people have spoken
like this, I will make the words that I put in your mouth like fire. And I will
make this people like wood, which the fiery judgments you speak will burn
up.’"
Fire is a representative
symbol of God’s presence and an instrument of His power—either in approval or
in destruction—according to Exodus 3:2 and Exodus 14:19. There could not be a
better symbol for God than fire, for one of His names is the Consuming Fire
seen in Deuteronomy 9:3.
God's word, when spoken
through His prophet, is powerful, consuming, and purifying—like fire. Fire is a
living, breathing entity: it “eats” and destroys whatever is in its path and
“breathes” to remain alive. If the Word of God is like fire shut up in our
bones, as Jeremiah 20:9 describes, then the only outlet for that fire is
through our mouths.
The Word of God is a
weapon—yet it must be used appropriately and powerfully. The Word needs to be
declared verbally for the heavens to put it to work, as stated in Job 22:28.
God’s Word will never fail. Like fire in our bones, it is a revelation and a
force.
The Word of God is such a
great weapon that in Revelation 11:5, God assures us that fire will pour from
the mouths of His witnesses against anyone who seeks to harm them. It is like
firing spiritual missiles against adversity.
Speech is part of our daily
lives, yet there is also “a time to be silent” as Ecclesiastes 3:7 says.
Maintaining silence when others are speaking is a mark of respect as seen in Job
6:24, and controlling our tongues when entrusted with confidential matters
shows discernment and discretion according to Proverbs 20:19.
You may be in a place right
now where you feel tempted to give up on what God has placed in your heart—but
like Jeremiah, you must let the fire shut up in your bones come out of your
mouth as a two-edged sword. When we pray, the words we speak are like fire—either
consuming the works of the enemy or reaching out like a hook to draw in what
grace has made available and what faith has paid for.
In 1 Kings 18 and 2 Kings 1,
Elijah used fire as a weapon both to defend his faith and to protect himself.
Whatever other weapons we may use as Christians, the Word of God remains the
primary and most powerful—it is a double-edged sword, a hammer, and a fire
capable of breaking, consuming, and bringing victory.
God promises we will not die
in Psalm 118:17, yet the power of life and death is still in our mouths according
to Proverbs 18:21. The power to change circumstances lies within us. When
provoked, we must remember that the Word of God in our mouths is a weapon of
fire—and we must use it with holy wisdom.
On the Day of Pentecost in Acts
2, cloven tongues like fire came down on God’s people—the same fire that is
given to us when we receive the Holy Spirit. Those tongues of fire symbolized
the heavenly language of power. How great is our God that He has given us a language
of fire! This fire is ours to use. Let us speak boldly and release the weapon
of fire from our mouths!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
-
In what ways have I experienced the Word of
God as a consuming fire in my own life?
-
How can I better control my tongue so that my
words release life, not destruction?
-
Am I daily speaking God’s Word over my
situation, or am I allowing silence and fear to hold me back?
-
How can I grow in using the “language of
fire” (Spirit-led words) in prayer and spiritual warfare?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank
You for the power of Your Word, which is like a consuming fire in my mouth. Let
my lips speak only what aligns with Your will. Teach me to use my words as holy
weapons—to tear down strongholds, overcome adversity, and release Your
life-giving promises into every situation in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
