GOOD NEIGHBOUR!

Matthew 22:38-39 TLB

This is the first and greatest commandment. The second most important is similar: 'Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.'

A neighbour is anyone who lives near us, someone who is close in sympathy or trust, and someone who is entitled to or shows neighbourly kindness—a fellow human being.

Are you a good neighbour? In the Bible, being a good neighbour means showing genuine love, kindness, and care to those around you—no matter who they are. It goes beyond just being friendly; it’s about looking after others and treating them the way you wish to be treated. Everyone is our neighbour! Jesus showed that there are no limits—everyone we meet is our neighbour, and we are called to show love and mercy to all kinds of people.

The message of the Bible does not allow the term “stranger;” we are expected to see everyone as our neighbour, especially as a good neighbour according to Luke 10:25-36.

Who do you call a neighbour? Everyone has neighbours. It might be the person on your street, in your neighbourhood, or local community. Do you know the person living to your left, right, opposite or behind you? Do you say hello to your next-door neighbour? Do you know their names?

Who is my neighbour? The expert in Jesus’ days wanted to know how many people to love and who a neighbour truly is. He expected Christ to say a neighbour was a friend, or at least an Israelite. The idea that a neighbour might be a foreigner never crossed his mind. The Lord expects everyone, especially Christians, to be neighbourly. Christ appealed to the man’s conscience, not just his reasoning. Rather than arguing, Jesus tells a story of a foreigner who acted as a neighbour—the Good Samaritan—showing that God expects every believer to treat everybody as a neighbour. The answer: the Samaritan who stopped and showed mercy is the good neighbour.

We live in a digital society where everyone is a “paparazzi” with a phone. Many would rather film a situation than offer help. Proverbs 3:28 teaches us that a neighbour should be helped quickly and not delayed. This verse also shows that our neighbour is often someone we see regularly. These verses in the Old Testament help us unlock who our neighbour is and point us to how we should respond.

The gospel teaches us how love should cross boundaries and differences. The Samaritan stopped to help, teaching us that our neighbours are not just those who look, act, or think like us, but anyone who shows compassion. Everyone has issues—sometimes more than we know—but we often hide behind polite smiles or surly behaviour. One way to know what people are going through and how to help is to show godly love as good neighbours, just as Jesus commanded in Matthew 22:37-38.

To love others, we must first be filled with the love of God. Our hearts, souls, and minds must be transformed and focused on the Lord before we can love our neighbours selflessly and intentionally. It pleases the Lord when we strive to love our neighbours. By imitating God’s character, we develop our own godly character. If we love others as we love ourselves, we show the Lord’s work in our lives.

Be a good neighbour as Christ commands. Love your neighbour as yourself.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

-         How do you show kindness and love to your neighbours, both familiar and strangers?

-         What steps can you take to get to know the people living around you and help meet their needs?

-         In what ways can you break down barriers and show love to those who are different from you?

-         How can the story of the Good Samaritan inspire you to act with compassion and mercy toward others?

PRAYER: Lord, fill my heart with love, kindness, and compassion for everyone I meet. Help me to be a good neighbour in my words and actions, to serve others as You have taught, and to show Your love to all, no matter who they are. Make me a light in my community and let my life reflect Your goodness. Amen.
