LAW WITH GRACE
John 1:17 (AMP)
For while the Law was given
through Moses, grace (unearned, undeserved favor and spiritual blessing) and
truth came through Jesus Christ.
Law is the bedrock of
society, or at least it should be. Sadly, there is no proper law and order in
most societies today. Law governs every sector of life. According to Webster’s
dictionary, law is a rule of being or conduct, established by an authority able
to enforce its will; a controlling regulation; the mode or order according to
which an agent or power acts. Unfortunately, there is so much lawlessness
rather than true justice today.
Laws may be universal or
particular, written or unwritten, published or secret. From the nature of the
highest laws, a degree of permanency or stability is always implied; but the
power which makes a law, or a superior power, may annul or change it at their
discretion. Laws are therefore implicitly changeable.
But not the law of God!
Scriptural law is bound in truth.
Everyone knows the Ten
Commandments; unfortunately, not everyone believes in them, just as everyone
knows about grace but, not everyone trusts in it. Or, dare I say, most people
confuse grace for leniency, as Romans 6:15 explains.
The law that was given to
Moses was not a show of grace: it commanded men to "obey" and
condemned them to death if they failed to obey. The law told man what was right
but, did not give man the power to always do the right thing.
The quickest and easiest way
to get someone to break the law is to strictly tell them not to do something.
Even when the law is broken,
man decides which law is punishable and how, who gets punished and who goes
free, but grace treats every lawbreaker as equal—the punishment or the mercy
never fits the crime.
Then grace came in the form
of Jesus Christ, along with truth. Jesus declared in Matthew 5:17-18 that He
came to fulfil the Law and not to abolish it, while emphasizing the eternal
nature of the Word of God. In doing so, Jesus obtained our eternal salvation,
delivering us from the deserved death of the law to being saved by grace
according to Ephesians 2:8. Grace and truth did not come to enforce the laws
and to judge man, but to save and deliver those willing to accept their
inability to save themselves from sin. See Acts 4:12, Romans 10:9, and John
3:17.
Grace is mercy when we don’t
expect or deserve it. Scripture tells us how God extended grace to us by
offering salvation that far outweighs our sinful nature—eternal life for free
but purchased and paid for by grace, not law.
Christ not only brought us
grace but, showed us the truth. He could and still says clearly, "I am the
truth." Christ's honesty and faithfulness are evident in His words and
works.
Grace begins with God and is
given freely by God. His graciousness to us is the example we need to extend
grace and mercy to others and not indulge in the penalty of the law.
Grace cannot be earned; it
is freely given but it cost the blood of the Lamb.
Law is the face of humanity,
full of all kinds of discrimination, emotions, and probability. Grace, on the
other hand, though not often seen, is not faceless; it is the face of the Lamb
of God, slain from the foundation of the world, full of glory, mercy, and
pardon for justifiable offense but justly overlooked and forgiven.
Let grace speak for you in
Jesus’ name.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How and when have you
benefitted from grace when the law was fitting?
- How do you describe the
differences between grace and leniency? How does it affect you?
- How does the understanding
of law versus grace impact your relationship with God and others?
PRAYER: Righteous Father and
judge of all flesh, thank you for not judging me based on the law and on my
crimes but offering me grace that frees me from condemnation in Christ’s name,
amen.
