MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOU!
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 TLB
I will say this: because these experiences I had were so
tremendous, God was afraid I might be puffed up by them; so I was given a
physical condition which has been a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan
to hurt and bother me and prick my pride. [8] Three different times I begged
God to make me well again. [9] Each time he said, "No. But I am with you;
that is all you need. My power shows up best in weak people." Now I am
glad to boast about how weak I am; I am glad to be a living demonstration of
Christ's power, instead of showing off my own power and abilities.
Nothing in this world or in the natural can ever satisfy a
person’s desires. People always strive for the next thing that could fulfil
their needs. But the Lord of heaven declares that His grace is always enough
for us, no matter where we are, who we are, or who we are with. His grace is
always sufficient!
Sometimes, situations and people will test our strength,
patience, and endurance. No matter how patient we try to be, there will always
be someone or something that makes us wish, pray, or cry out for more patience.
We often need more grace when facing the storms of life, and
sometimes it feels like God has forgotten us or is ignoring us.
Wherever you are in life—whether on a mountain, in a valley,
or the wilderness—God’s grace is always available to see you through.
“My grace is sufficient!” Paul says in this passage that
God’s grace “is sufficient” (present tense, meaning it is always there whenever
we need and acknowledge it). He goes on to say that God’s power is constantly
available in equal measure, and His power is made perfect in our weakness.
Paul’s own weaknesses, just like ours, demonstrate God’s power.
This shows that God’s grace and power are always available on
every believer’s journey, season, and trial. When trouble comes, God is enough
to carry you through. No problem, whether emotional, physical, or spiritual, is
too big for God.
God’s grace and strength are available to everyone! After
all, He is EL-SHADDAI—“All-Sufficient God” according to Genesis 17:1b.
We don’t know what Paul’s “thorn” was, but we read that he
asked the Lord three times to remove it. Instead of removing it, the Lord
reminded Paul—and us—that His grace is enough. Paul, a motivating and
enthusiastic man, could have given up because of this irritating thorn, but
when God didn’t take it away, He gave Paul the grace to manage it and continue.
The thorn kept Paul humble and prevented pride. Perhaps God
is using whatever thorn irritates you to keep you humble and dependent on Him.
Just as the Lord gave Paul grace to overcome the thorn, God
can do the same for you if you allow His grace to be truly sufficient for you.
Some of the trials we face are not punishments from God, but
humbling thorns meant to keep us grounded and not proud. Only discernment, as
seen in 1 John 4:1, can show us the spirit troubling us.
The Lord told Moses and the Israelites that if they failed to
drive out the inhabitants of Canaan in Numbers 33:55, those people would become
thorns in their sides.
Notice that Paul did not get angry at the thorn or at God.
Many of us get upset with God when He doesn’t deliver us as we think He should.
Like Paul, our thorns should make us weak and fully dependent on God. We should
understand, as Paul did, that the weaker we get, the stronger God becomes
within us.
Our weakness is always an opportunity for God to show His
glory and power through His grace. His grace is always sufficient, and His
power always available. Do not try to suffer apart from God’s grace.
