NO SHORTCUTS!
Matthew 7:13-20 TLB
"Heaven can be entered
only through the narrow gate! The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is
wide enough for all the multitudes who choose its easy way. [14] But the
Gateway to Life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it.
[15] "Beware of false teachers who come disguised as harmless sheep, but
are wolves and will tear you apart. [16] You can detect them by the way they
act, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit. You need never confuse
grapevines with thorn bushes or figs with thistles. [17] Different kinds of
fruit trees can quickly be identified by examining their fruit. [18] A variety
that produces delicious fruit never produces an inedible kind. And a tree
producing an inedible kind can't produce what is good. [19] So the trees having
the inedible fruit are chopped down and thrown on the fire. [20] Yes, the way
to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit produced.
We all love shortcuts! The
shorter, the better! But my mum used to say, “what one thinks is a shortcut,
ends up being the longest route.” So true from my experience. The Bible
consistently warns against taking shortcuts—whether morally, spiritually, or in
daily life—and instead emphasizes the value of patience, hard work, and doing
things the right way.
Matthew 7:13-14 (MSG)
directly addresses shortcuts in our spiritual journey: “Don’t look for
shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easy-going formulas for
a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that
stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God! —is vigorous
and requires total attention.”
Interesting way to put
‘shortcuts’ in perspective. This passage teaches that following God often
requires effort, patience, and persistence; there are no easy, “shortcut”
routes to spiritual maturity or any meaningful achievement in life for that
matter.
Proverbs 14:23 says: “All
hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Genuine effort
produces true reward, while just trying to find quick fixes or talking without
working leads to nothing.
“There is a way that seems
right to a man, but its end is the way to death,” according to Proverbs 16:25.
This means we must always choose what is godly and right, and not what merely
seems right to us. Going through what seems like a shortcut or an “easier” path
can have serious consequences.
Have you ever taken a route
that seemed right or short but ended up meandering like the Israelites in the
wilderness?
Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar
tried to “speed up” God’s promise of a son by taking matters into their own
hands in Genesis 16. It led to lifelong complications and strife. This
demonstrates the trouble that comes from not waiting for God’s timing and
trying to shortcut His plan.
Taking shortcuts can lead to
regret, loss, and distance from God’s intended purpose for us. The Bible
encourages us to trust God’s timing and methods, even when the process is
longer or more difficult than we wish.
In the same way, no one can
take a shortcut into heaven, but sadly, so many are taking shortcuts to
hell—obviously! If we have not received Jesus, we by default receive Satan and
his kingdom.
Jacob, assisted by his
mother Rebekah, took shortcuts by deceiving his father Isaac to get the
blessing meant for his brother Esau. The outcome was family division and
personal hardship, illustrating the high personal cost of dishonesty and
impatience.
Generally, the “narrow gate”
mentioned in Matthew 7:14 is a metaphor for the harder, more disciplined path
that leads to life, which so many today would like to avoid. Shortcuts, while
tempting, often result in missing the lasting rewards gained from faithfulness
and perseverance.
The Bible teaches that real
growth and blessing come from perseverance, honest work, and faithfully
following God—without shortcuts. It warns that seemingly easier paths can end
in disappointment, loss, or even destruction. Instead, we’re called to do things
with integrity, trust God’s process, and value the lessons learned through
perseverance.
Taking shortcuts is often
described as a form of spiritual and moral laziness, undermining character and
long-term blessings.
Israel’s wilderness journey
in Deuteronomy 1:2 and 46 could have been completed quicker, but God led them
through the wilderness so they would learn obedience and trust, not just reach
the destination swiftly. Attempts to “shortcut” God’s lessons led to hardship
and loss.
Embracing shortcuts can lead
to regret, loss, or even greater difficulties than the original path would have
entailed. Shortcuts may seem to offer quick success, but they undermine
spiritual growth, character, and relationship with God.
Spiritual maturity is
described as a process requiring endurance and testing. Scriptures regularly
link spiritual reward and satisfaction to perseverance through challenges, not
avoiding them.
Shortcuts—whether ethical,
spiritual, or practical—can lead to spiritual complacency, missed blessings,
regret, and sometimes destruction. We are called to embrace the slow, steady
path of integrity, endurance, and trust in God’s timing and methods.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How does taking shortcuts
risk leading me away from God’s path?
- What are the spiritual
dangers of seeking quick fixes instead of faithfulness?
- Why does Jesus compare the
wide and narrow gates in relation to shortcuts?
- How can I identify and
avoid spiritual shortcuts that threaten my faith?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to
depend fully on your word and timing and not to run ahead of or around you in
any area of my life, in Jesus’ name, amen.
