PIDGIN GOSSIP!

Proverbs 26:20 “ Fire nor dey katch without wood; so without aproko, kworel nor go dey.

 

Nobody wey no sabi gossip. Sometimes na we be the gist wey people dey pass around, other times na we dey carry the matter for mouth. We don hear am, talk am, even suffer from am. Dem dey always talk say smoke no dey without fire, but sometimes that smoke na from jealousy, anger, or bad belle wey dey burn small for inside. 

Gossip mean to talk bad for person back — spread wicked gist, lies, rumour, or tori wey no get head. Sometimes e dey sound like small joke, but e go still put bad light for person matter. Even though Bible no call gossip “deadly sin”, e still be bad sin wey fit cause plenty wahala. 

Wetin be gossip? Gossip na to talk pass your mouth, yarn wetin no go help anybody, waka up and down dey carry tori; talk wetin go spoil another person name. Proverbs 18:8 talk say gossip na rumour wey sweet for ear but e dey cause gbege. 

James 3:6 talk say tongue be like fire — e fit scatter plenty things. For verse 8, e still talk say tongue na restless evil, full of deadly poison. Gossip na like fire wey bad-belle people go blow make e burn well. 

Most gossip na half-truth or clean lie wey get aim to spoil another person character. Once you don talk am, you no fit swallow am back. Small sentence or even one kain look fit finish person name — see Proverbs 11:9. 

Gossip don turn business wey newspapers, magazines, and even online blogs dey use make money — many of their stories no get truth and e dey wicked. But for Leviticus 19:16, God talk clear say we no suppose do gossip. 

People wey like gossip no be correct friends — avoid dem. Dem na demolition experts — dem dey use gossip pull people down make themselves look beta, while dem turn another person to wetin dem wan make am be. 

Gossip na to dey talk about person mistake, failings, or shameful things without dem consent. Even if you no mean harm, e still be gossip — see Psalm 101:5. 

When you gossip, na you dey judge person with your own standard, but Matthew 7:1 talk say make we no judge. For court, rumour and personal opinion no dey allowed because e fit mislead judgement. But we go turn parlour, office, car, and even church to “gossip court” and spoil somebody wey no get chance to defend him name. 

Anybody fit join gossip just to repeat wetin dem hear secretly. Proverbs get many verses wey warn about gossip. Proverbs 11:12 talk say: “Person wey no get sense go insult him neighbour, but wise person go hold him mouth. Gossip dey leak secret, but trustworthy person go keep am.”

Proverbs 21:23 talk say if you guard your tongue, you go save yourself from wahala. So make we control our mouth and avoid gossip. If we give God our natural desire, e go help us stay righteous. 

Before you open mouth talk wetin go hurt another person, ask yourself: “If na me, I go like make dem talk this kind thing about me?” 

Believers suppose be peacemakers, no be scatter scatter people, according to Proverbs 16:28. Even if you think say you no dey gossip, ask yourself: why gossipers dey comfortable to talk am around you? Na because you don gossip before or because you no dey stop dem when dem bring tori? 

Gossip sweet but e go destroy — abeg hold your mouth. Be careful of wetin you hear and wetin you talk. Gossip and slander na tools of Satan! 

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

- You dey control your tongue or you dey always add your own wetin you see or hear? 

- You dey choose wetin and who you dey listen to? How you fit stop to join gossip? 

- You don see result of gossip for your life before — whether na your own or from another person? 

- You don ever suffer from gossip wey pain you well-well? 

PRAYER: Papa God, help me make I no use my mouth pull people down. Teach me make my words always sweet and build others up. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
