THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT 

Exodus 20:13 “Make una nor kill.”.

 

All life na God get am, because na Him create life, especially human beings. To kill pesin no be just wahala for another person, but because everybody dey made for God image, na wahala for God sef. All life na holy; e belong to God and we suppose dey dedicate am to Him.

The sixth commandment wey talk say make you no kill pesin na about “murder.” Na correct word dey so for wetin dem talk for Hebrew. E mean if pesin plan am kill another pesin because of personal wahala.

To kill pesin, na offence for God wey create us, and wahala for pesin wey dey like us. When Adam and Eve disobey God, dem bring sin come this world. Maybe dem feel say di sin wey dem sin just to chop fruit no too bad, but dem no know say dat kain sin wey small fit turn big quick for their pikin dem body. Adam and Eve offend God, but Cain na God and human being wey he offend. Small wahala dey always fit grow bigger.

Some people dey ask about war and when government kill pesin for punishment? Kill or murder dey happen for war and for punishment for bad case inside bible, but this commandment na for person wey plan kill or homicide like police go talk. The word “murder” na verb wey fit mean both when pesin kill pesin by mistake or with plan.

God talk say make we no kill pesin for bad reason. E important to know say this commandment no mean all killing, like if person defend himself. The Hebrew word mean unauthorised killing, not every killing.

This commandment dey teach us to respect pesin life. God wan make we treat others with love, gentle, and make peace. Jesus still go far for Matthew 5:21-26 wey explain say to kill pesin mean more than to use cutlass or gun. E mean if you get bad belle or no fit forgive person. Like Roberta Flack talk – “killing me softly”, some people no dey understand say murder fit slow or sharp.

Apostle John talk say if you hate pesin, na same as to murder am. E write am say, “Anybody wey hate im brother na murderer, and una sabi say murderer no get eternal life inside am” (1 John 3:15).

You fit talk say, “I never kill anybody.” Good – you don do wetin law talk. But Jesus yan say bad belle break this law. You don ever vex reach say you wish something bad for pesin? Or imagine say na you fit finish am? Jesus still show say this law, na for heart most times. Even if our hand clean for court, our mind fit dey guilty, so make we ask God for forgiveness. Make we do opposite of hate – show love, forgive, just like James 5:6 say – “Una don judge and kill good people wey no fit defend demselves.”

Murder, like other sin, dey start for for mind – see Matthew 15:18-19, Mark 7:20-23. Na from thought, from hate, e go turn to action to kill. God wan make we remove hate, even love our enemies, Matthew 5:43-48. No try revenge; do good to dem, Romans 12:17-21.

The Sixth Commandment na order from God against murder, e dey show say life dey precious and God na the owner.

To break this commandment, na serious wahala for moral and spiritual.

REFLECTION QUESTION 

- Wetin make “murder” and “killing” difference important when you try understand the Sixth Commandment?

- How e change your mind about justice and moral matter if you know say na murder (illegal killing) this commandment dey talk, no be all killing?

- How this commandment dey show say pesin life dey important and holy?

- How you go reason self-defence, war, capital punishment when you understand the commandment like this?
