REFERENCE POINT!
Hebrews 13:8 AMPC
Jesus Christ (the Messiah)
is [always] the same, yesterday, today, [yes] and forever (to the ages).
In a world that constantly
shifts—morals, trends, relationships, even our emotions—it’s easy to feel lost
or uncertain. We often look for something stable to anchor our decisions,
identity, and purpose. That’s where the idea of a reference point becomes powerful.
A reference point is a fixed
position used to determine direction or meaning. In life, God is that fixed
point. He does not change. His character, His promises, and His love remain
constant. When we align our lives with Him, we find clarity, peace, and purpose.
A reference point is a known
point used to judge, measure, or understand something else. It can be an idea,
fact, event, or physical location that helps establish a basis for comparison
or orientation.
In a biblical context, the
concept of a reference point often relates to Jesus Christ or God's Word as the
ultimate standard or guide for believers. The Bible portrays Jesus as the
perfect reference point—the beginning and end of faith, the example to follow,
and the motivation that keeps Christians focused and encouraged in their
spiritual journey. Likewise, the Bible itself is described as a positive
reference point that guides spiritual growth and reformation in the lives of
believers and the church.
When we shift our focus from
God to our circumstances, fear and instability take over. Keeping Jesus as our
reference point helps us rise above life's storms. As we see with Peter in
Matthew 14:22–33, he steps out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus. As
long as his eyes are fixed on Jesus—his reference point—he walks steadily. But
when he looks at the wind and waves, he begins to sink.
Christian teaching
emphasizes fixing one’s eyes on Jesus as the key reference point amid life's
challenges, following His example of endurance and faithfulness as the ultimate
benchmark for Christian living. The kingdom of God is also said to provide a visible
reference point for believers to orient their lives spiritually.
The Bible, the Word of God,
and Jesus are all reference points for everything pertaining to life and
godliness, according to 2 Peter 1:3. Jesus Christ is the ultimate reference
point for our faith, conduct, and spiritual growth.
God is the unchanging
standard, according to Malachi 3:6: “I the Lord do not change.” Therefore, He
must be our reference point always. God’s unchanging nature makes Him a
reliable reference point in a world full of change. Our text tells us Jesus
Christ remains trustworthy forever. Jesus is our eternal anchor—unchanging and
trustworthy.
The Word of God is a guide
and a dependable reference point, according to Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a
lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The scriptures provide direction,
clarity, and a moral compass, just like a reference point. As stated in 2 Timothy
3:16–17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness…” The Bible is the standard by which
we must measure truth and behaviour.
Christ is the only
Cornerstone, according to Ephesians 2:20. In ancient architecture, the
cornerstone was the reference point for the entire building. Spiritually,
Christ is that cornerstone for our lives. For this reason, we must fix our eyes
on Jesus, as commanded in Hebrews 12:2 — “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfecter of our faith…”
This speaks directly to the
idea of choosing a spiritual reference point to stay focused and faithful.
Who or what is your
reference point in life? In every situation, we hold on to something or someone
as a reference point, guiding and pointing us on the right path of
righteousness.
No matter where we are or
whatever life brings, we must always allow the Word and Spirit of God to be our
reference point, so we can always be victorious.
