SPIRITUAL AND PERSONAL POISON 1!

Ephesians 4:31-32 TPT

“Lay aside bitter words, temper tantrums, revenge, profanity, and insults.  But instead be kind and affectionate toward one another. Has God graciously forgiven you? Then graciously forgive one another in the depths of Christ’s love.”

Poison or venom is any substance that can cause illness or death when introduced or absorbed into the body. Poison is a toxic and venomous substance, usually extracted from plants or chemically created.

Deuteronomy 29:18 says the poison of an embittered spirit turns one away from the living God. This may signify venomous or poisonous doctrines and teachings that lie outside the parameters of the true Gospel of the Bible.

Negative emotions have become so common in this generation that they are often accepted as a way of life or even used to describe someone's personality.

Some people allow such emotions to break them, stunt their growth, or stop them from living a healthy lifestyle, while physically expressing these emotions.

According to Romans 12:1-2, we should not conform to the age of acceptance of poisonous behaviours that society condones. Rather, we should allow the Word of God to affect and transform our mindset. God admonishes us through Scripture to vehemently avoid these attitudes and behaviours.

Anger, especially uncontrollable anger, is poison to the soul. Everyone gets angry at some point in life, but we must not behave like the fool described in Proverbs 29:11, who constantly vents their anger. Many people excuse anger today by blaming their natural disposition or circumstances, but when anger influences our actions, it becomes sin, no matter how valid the reason, according to Ephesians 4:26.

It is acceptable to be angry, as long as it does not consume us or become the poison we use to harm ourselves and those around us. The letter “D” separates anger from danger, and together they form a catastrophic combination. Be very careful how you handle anger because uncontrolled anger often leads to danger.

Simply put, anger is sinful passion.

Envy or jealousy dethrones God from our hearts. It is leprous, destroying our spiritual health while stealing joy, happiness, and contentment from life. Proverbs 14:30 says envy causes the bones to rot. We often waste much good energy expressing envy, jealousy, or anger—energy that could have been used positively for profitable purposes. James 3:14-16 calls envy demonic. Envy blinds us to the good in others and prevents us from benefiting from healthy relationships.

Gluttony is the excessive taking or doing of things that can negatively impact us physically, mentally, emotionally, and otherwise. According to 1 Corinthians 10:31, too much of anything is harmful. The Roman Empire fell because it overindulged in delicacies but starved its soul—a condition many Christians face today with religious diets full of useless fat and empty calories.

Instant gratification often battles with spiritual gratification. The attitude of “I want it now” and excessive consumption are the norms in our society today, as Philippians 3:19 warns. Proverbs 23:2 even says to “put a knife to your throat” if you are a glutton. Overeating is a poison that causes many medical and physical problems. Moderation is crucial, as Proverbs 25:16 teaches.

It doesn’t matter how poison is administered; after a while, its effect begins to destroy you. This is a prime area to exercise self-control. Choose to say no to spiritual and personal poison.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- What negative emotions or attitudes do I struggle with that might be poisoning my spirit and relationships?

- How do I respond when I feel anger rising—am I quick to vent, or do I seek God’s help to control it?

- In what ways might envy or jealousy be affecting my joy and my relationships with others?

- Where in my life do I need to practice moderation and self-control to avoid the harmful effects of excess?

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and grace that continually forgive and restore us. Lord, help me to lay aside all bitterness, anger, envy, and every poisonous attitude that seeks to harm my spirit and my relationships. Fill my heart with Your kindness and affection, so I may forgive others as You have forgiven me in Jesus’ name, amen.
