SPIRITUAL AND PERSONAL POISON 2!
Guarding Your Heart and Mind
Proverbs 4:23 AMPC
Keep and guard your heart
with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs
of life.
The spiritual and personal
poisons don’t stop at anger, envy, and gluttony. Many other attitudes and behaviours
can secretly seep into our lives and slowly damage our spiritual health and
overall well-being.
Bitterness is a poison that
eats away at joy and peace. Hebrews 12:15 warns, “See to it that no one falls
short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and
defile many.” Bitterness can harden your heart, making you resistant to God’s healing
and blocking your ability to forgive and love others.
Unforgiveness acts like
poison in your soul by keeping wounds open and fresh. Jesus teaches in Matthew
6:14-15 that forgiving others is essential, or else the Father withholds
forgiveness from us. Holding on to grudges feeds bitterness and spiritual
poison.
Fear and anxiety are toxic
emotions that can paralyze us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us not to be anxious but to bring all concerns to
God in prayer, so His peace guards our hearts and minds.
Pride is one of the
deadliest poisons to spiritual growth. It blinds us to our own faults and
causes separation from God and others. Proverbs 16:18 reminds us, “Pride goes
before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Addiction or dependency,
whether to substances, habits, or even certain people, can be a form of
poisoning that steals freedom and joy. 1 Corinthians 6:12 reminds us that
although everything may be permissible, not everything is beneficial or should
master us.
We must guard our hearts
against spiritual poisons, we need to actively protect our emotions, thoughts,
and spirit by practicing biblical principles of self-control, renewal, and
vigilance. Use these key ways based on Scripture and spiritual wisdom to help:
1. Renew your mind constantly
as Romans 12:2 urges us not to conform to worldly patterns but to be
transformed by renewing the mind through God's Word. Daily meditation replaces
toxic thoughts with godly wisdom and truth.
2. Put on the Armor of God as
instructed in Ephesians 6:10-18 as protection against spiritual attacks and
poisonous influences.
3. Control your emotions
according to Ephesians 4:31-32 by laying aside bitterness, anger, and other
negative emotions and instead showing kindness and forgiveness. Learning to
manage your emotions prevents them from becoming toxic poisons.
4. Practice forgiveness. Holding
onto unforgiveness breeds bitterness as seen in Hebrews 12:15. Choose to
forgive others as God has forgiven you.
5. Exercise self-control and
moderation. Galatians 5:22-23 highlights self-control as a fruit of the Spirit.
Be vigilant about excesses in behaviour or desires that can act as poison, such
as gluttony or addiction.
6. Pray for protection and guidance
by consistently ask God in prayer to guard your heart, reveal hidden toxins,
and empower you to resist temptation and negative influences according to Psalm
51:10.
7. Cultivate Godly passions
which direct your passions toward God and His purposes as stated in Romans
12:11. Passion focused on God fuels perseverance and guards against destructive
desires.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Are there any bitter
attitudes or unforgiveness that I need to surrender to God for healing?
- What fears or anxieties
have I been carrying that keep me from experiencing God’s peace?
- In what ways might pride
be hindering my spiritual growth or relationships?
- Do I rely on anything
besides God to fill emptiness or provide comfort that could be harmful to me?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank
You for Your compassion and patience with me. I ask You to reveal any
bitterness, unforgiveness, pride, fear, or addiction that is poisoning my soul.
Help me to surrender these to You, so Your healing and freedom can flow in my
life. Fill me with Your peace, humility, and love. Teach me to trust You fully,
relying on Your strength rather than my own. Guard my heart and mind daily, so
I may walk in freedom and serve You joyfully. In Your powerful name, Amen.
