UNAUTHORISED GATHERING!

Isaiah 54:15-17 AMPC

Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you shall fall and surrender to you. [16] Behold, I have created the smith who blows on the fire of coals and who produces a weapon for its purpose; and I have created the devastator to destroy. [17] But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong. This [peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord [those in whom the ideal Servant of the Lord is reproduced]; this is the righteousness or the vindication which they obtain from Me [this is that which I impart to them as their justification], says the Lord.

Unauthorized gathering! There are so many of those taking place all over the world right now for all kinds of causes—gatherings that benefit some but are troublesome for others and may be dangerous and derailing for most. Some are peaceful, some combative in nature. No matter the reason for gathering, they all have pros and cons.

A gathering becomes unauthorized when it is either unapproved by the appropriate authorities or is an illegal gathering.

An unauthorized gathering generally means a group of people coming together without official permission from the relevant authority.

The exact meaning can vary depending on the context.

In many countries, certain gatherings, protests, or assemblies require prior approval from local government, police, or another authority. If people gather without that approval, it’s considered unauthorized.

If people gather in a place without the owner’s consent (e.g., a workplace, school, or private venue), it may be deemed an unauthorized gathering.

Some locations—such as factories, military bases, and restricted zones—restrict group assemblies for safety or security reasons.

In short, it’s a meeting or assembly that hasn’t been approved or permitted according to the rules, laws, or policies in force for that location.

Context matters a lot, and what counts as unauthorized can vary depending on local laws, the number of people involved, the location, and the purpose of the gathering. Because it may impact public safety, authorities may restrict gatherings to prevent disruptions, ensure safety, or maintain public order.

In the Bible, actions or assemblies that operate outside of God’s ordained authority are considered unauthorized. Examples include the story of Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 10:1-2, who offered “unauthorized fire” before God and were punished for not following God’s precise instructions. Similarly, Uzzah was struck down for unauthorized touching of the Ark in 2 Samuel 6:6-7. These incidents show the seriousness of unauthorized religious actions: doing things not commanded by God, even with good intentions, was seen as irreverence and could have dire consequences.

The Lord gives us the assurance that no person, people, nation, or gathering can defeat us, because He is our protection against every attack. It doesn’t matter what weapon is raised against us—the Lord will not permit it to do us harm.

Who is gathered or gathering against you? Wherever there is a gang-up, it’s never for good, and as far as Heaven and the Lord are concerned, that gathering is unauthorized—but be assured of God’s protection.

Gathering itself is ordained and commanded in Hebrews 10:25 and Acts 2, 4, and 6. Christians are called to assemble for worship, encouragement, discipline, and teaching. This is an authorized gathering!

Biblically, an unauthorized gathering isn’t described in the same legal terms as modern governments use, but there are principles and examples that relate to gatherings that are either not sanctioned by God or go against divine or spiritual order. These gatherings, meant for evil and not good—for harm—are always unauthorized before God.

A gathering is biblically unauthorized if it is organized or conducted in a way that contradicts God’s revealed order or instructions—for example, teaching doctrines contrary to Scripture, worshiping with forms not commanded by God, conducting church practices without appropriate biblical backing, or engaging in actions detrimental to our lives and destiny.

Any gathering that opposes God’s will or leadership is unauthorized and often condemned.

- Korah’s rebellion in Numbers 16—where he and others gathered against Moses and Aaron, challenging their leadership—was displeasing to the Lord and therefore a gathering against God’s servants. This was an unauthorized and rebellious assembly, and God judged them severely.

- At the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11, people gathered to build a tower to reach heaven, defying God’s command to spread across the earth. Though not violent, it was an unauthorized attempt to assert human pride over divine instruction.

- When it comes to worship and faith in society today, we see many unauthorized religious gatherings that do more harm than good, because they are against God’s plan, will, and purpose. These are false worship gatherings—assemblies for idol worship or false teachings—which are considered unauthorized in the spiritual sense, as seen in the Golden Calf Incident in Exodus 32.

As declared by the Lord, any unauthorized gathering against you shall fall!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- Have I ever participated in a gathering that went against biblical principles? What was the purpose of that gathering, and how did it affect my spiritual walk?

- What are the dangers of spiritual gatherings that lack biblical foundation or leadership? How can we guard against false teachings or divisive movements?

- What kind of gatherings am I drawn to, and why? Are they helping me grow spiritually or pulling me away from God?

- Is there a gathering I need to step away from or reconsider being part of? What is God prompting me to do in response to this reflection?

PRAYER: Dear Lord and Father, help me to know what kind of gathering I join, and help me to discern and step away from any unauthorized gathering, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
