A GOD-SHAPED HOLE!

Luke 10:38-42 AMPC

Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house. [39] And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord's feet and was listening to His teaching. [40] But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! [41] But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; [42] There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.

The phrase “God-shaped hole” isn’t explicitly in the Bible, but the concept refers to the deep spiritual longing or emptiness in the human heart that only God can fill. This idea is based on verses like Ecclesiastes 3:11, which says, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." This suggests that God placed within humans a desire for something eternal and transcendent that only He can satisfy.

Rob Evans — popularly known as the “Doughnut Man” — wrote the song “Life Without Jesus is Like a Doughnut,” inspired by the big hole in the middle of the pastry. When you think of the hole, it makes a lot of sense, but Captain Hanson Gregory added the hole in the middle so doughnuts could cook evenly.

In the human case, life without Jesus has a gaping God-shaped hole in the middle of the heart, without which life will not “cook evenly.” Jesus illustrated this fact with the story in Mark 10:17-22, showing that no amount of wealth, prestige, or network contacts can truly save or satisfy a person.

We often spend and waste our lives, effort, and time seeking things to occupy and satisfy us instead of dwelling in God’s presence. Ecclesiastes 6 speaks about satisfaction—meanings in life, fulfilment, fullness, significance, happiness, and blessedness—but calls it “vanity of vanities.” Life based around all these things without Christ is vanity.

God-shaped hole in the heart is about those who work God into their schedule instead of scheduling their lives around God, see Psalm 27:4. The main thing we should strive to do is seek the kingdom of God according to Matthew 6:33. We cannot ignore God and expect to have great joy and contentment, which only comes from His presence.

The pursuit of happiness is a futile race to fill the God-shaped hole in the heart of man with everything else—career, work, marriage, children, and more. It’s not wrong to desire these things, nor is it bad to pursue them, but not at the expense of our spiritual life and race.

The phrase “one thing,” used by Jesus with Martha, echoes David’s desire to pursue that one thing—what Jesus said was more important than anything else, and what Mary chose. Mary seized the opportunity to learn from the Messiah what she needed to fill the God-shaped hole in her, while Martha pursued busyness and necessity.

We all have God-shaped holes in one area of our lives or another, and only God can fill them. That’s why we need to constantly dwell in Him.

Many people look for meaning and happiness in the wrong places and things, thinking they are perfectly happy. But they have not experienced the true meaning, satisfaction, and blessedness that come from a relationship with the Creator.

The God-shaped hole is that innate void or yearning for God. When people try to fill it with possessions, relationships, or accomplishments, they are never truly fulfilled. Only a relationship with God through Jesus Christ can fill this void and bring true peace and satisfaction.

Without God, man only has a physical life. God warned Adam and Eve that on the day they rejected Him, they would “surely die” as stated in Genesis 2:17. They disobeyed but did not die physically that day; rather, they died spiritually. That’s what happens to those with a God-shaped hole in their life.

When you don’t have Christ, you have no power over sin or Satan, and you truly don’t have life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- Which areas of my life feel empty or unfulfilled despite what I have?

- Am I trying to fill my God-shaped hole with things other than God?

- How can I prioritize spending time in God’s presence daily?

- What “one thing” am I choosing to focus on like Mary did?

- Do I seek God’s kingdom first in all I do?

PRAYER: Lord, I thank You for being the only One who can fill the God-shaped hole in my heart. Help me to seek Your presence above all else, to find true satisfaction and peace only in You. Teach me to fix my eyes on You and not on the temporary things of this world. Renew my hunger for You daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
