CONSIDER YOUR WAYS!
Haggai 1:3-5 MEV
Then the word of the LORD
came by Haggai the prophet, saying: Is
it time for you yourselves to live in paneled houses, while this house lies in
ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the
LORD of Hosts: Consider your ways.
People say you must think of
number one, think of yourself! Our culture emphasizes putting self over
anything or anyone else. Yet God, through Haggai, told the people that He would
see to their needs as they trusted in Him and gave Him their time and money.
Consider your ways is an admonition to consider the things we do.
Consider your ways is a call
to carefully examine, reflect on, and assess the direction and actions of one’s
life in light of God’s will. Here God urges His people to think deeply about
how they have been living, their priorities, and the consequences of their
actions.
Everyone is so busy making a
living, running endless errands, fulfilling requirements, seeking to achieve
more, and organizing life. Sadly, so many people struggle to make meaning of
anything at the end of each day, trying to understand where the time went. As
life becomes increasingly busy, we find ourselves losing sight of the important
things: to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness according to
Matthew 6:33 and to passionately build up “the house of the Lord.”
The foundation of the temple
of God was laid fourteen years before, with considerable progress, but it had
lain waste in an unfinished state to the present time. It was heartbreaking for
the Lord that the people were so busy building homes for themselves to the
detriment of the Holy Temple. Hence, the warning to consider your way.
We neglect kingdom issues
but pay careful attention and expenses to personal issues. Our accounts grow
fat from the money and precious time we use, yet we neglect to offer anything
to building up the kingdom of God. We put so much effort into looking good and
presentable to make good impressions but never bother to address spiritual and
kingdom falsifications and misrepresentations—we tend to add our quota to an
already bad press of the kingdom.
Consider your ways!
Self-examination is a practical way of living, more so when kingdom issues are
at stake. We should consider our ways and directions and be sure we are
following God’s instructions; we should view our conduct on all sides according
to Psalm 119:59.
The word “ways” means
journey or manner. God is asking the returned Israeli remnant to reflect on
their priorities. As He asks you and me to do, we must reflect on our
priorities and consider our ways.
God wants us to honestly
consider the direction of our lives; to consider the road we are on and whether
we want to continue to head that way, as Proverbs 14:12 says—the end of
whatever road we choose to travel may not be right but may lead to eternal destruction.
There are times in our Christian walk that we need to consider our roads or
ways and ask specifically, “Am I properly investing in the kingdom of God for
His glory or myself?”
Times, society, and ways of
life are changing moment by moment, but the word of God never changes, says
Isaiah 40:8.
People don’t usually like
change, but it is a necessity of life. They prefer how things were; many want
to go back to the old ways or say it doesn’t matter how I do things, God sees
my heart and understands. How do you manage change in your life?
As Haggai 1:7 instructs,
consider your ways, and ask God to show you areas in your life that need
prioritizing. Consider your ways.
