DON’T BURNOUT!
1 Timothy 1:12 AMPC
I give thanks to Him Who has
granted me [the needed] strength and made me able [for this], Christ Jesus our
Lord, because He has judged and counted me faithful and trustworthy, appointing
me to [this stewardship of] the ministry.
Exhaustion, weariness, and
being overwhelmed are a sign of burnout.
Burnout is recognized as an
"occupational phenomenon" rather than a medical condition by the
World Health Organization. The main features include exhaustion: Feeling
drained, tired, and lacking energy. Detachment or Cynicism, feeling mentally
distant from responsibilities or negative about one's work/life. And reduced efficacy:
Feeling less able to perform well or achieve goals.
Bunout happens to the best
of us at some point. No one is exempted from it, especially if we do things
that cause burnout.
God Commands Rest in Exodus
20:8-10 and modelled rest after creation by taking a rest (which we all know He
doesn’t need) on the seventh day and commands us to take time to recharge
physically and spiritually. Ignoring rest can lead to burnout.
Are you one of those who
think they do not need a break? Well, you do. If you don’t want to burnout.
That’s why Jesus invites the
weary in Matthew 11:28-30 to “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.” Offering relief for our souls and a lighter burden
when life feels overwhelming which we all do from the challenges and storms of
life.
But what causes burnout? It develops
from chronic stress that has not been managed effectively from the continual
high demands at work or home. A lack of support or resources and unmanageable
workloads, constant pressure, and workplace conflict. Sounds familiar? It should.
Because this is the face of a lot of our lives.
If you don’t want to
burnout-rest is mandatory!
Learn what works and don’t work
for you, what causes stress and avoid them.
We must in earnest, cast
every problem and burden on the Lord as instructed in 1 Peter 5:7 because he
cares for us, and make prayer is a lifeline during burnout—God wants us to
release our stress to Him.
Seek and cultivate new
things that will alleviate stress. And learn to shut down and out sometimes to
regroup.
Take time to withdraw as Mark
6:31 says, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Even
Jesus told His disciples to step away from the crowds and rest. We cannot
continue to remain in the crowd and expect to function properly. We must find
time to disengage and decompress from the pressure of the crowd. The crowd can
be in form of family (yes, we need time off from children, spouse and more to
realign and find ourselves in the Lord). It could be word- hence the need for
holidays and annual leave. These helps us refocus and refresh for better
performance. So, the crowd can be anything that saps our strength.
We cannot sustain ourselves;
we need the Lord and Nehemiah 8:10 tells us so. True Strength comes from God says
Isaiah 40:29-31 – “He gives strength to the weary… those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.” When our energy runs out, God renews us. Trusting
Him helps us endure without collapsing.
And as much as Philippians
4:13 says we can do all things, notice that all things are only through Christ
who strengthens me.
But how do I know I may be burnout?
When you find yourself experiencing
and feeling the following, then, it’s time to step back and “chillax”.
Physical fatigue and health
issues
Emotional exhaustion and
feeling hopeless
Increased irritability,
frustration, or apathy
Difficulty concentrating or
"brain fog"
Withdrawal from
responsibilities and relationships.
Burnout affects wellbeing,
productivity, and relationships, and addressing it early is crucial to prevent
more severe mental and physical health problems. To avoid this and to get out
stress-induced depression and burnout quicker, we must participate actively in
whatever community we chose-church, ministry, friendship, neighbourhood and
more, so that we have people to support, encourage and help us according to Galatians
6:2 because isolation worsens burnout.
The Bible teaches that rest
is not optional—it’s spiritual obedience. It calls us to trust God, take
breaks, pray, and lean on community. Burnout is a signal to slow down and
realign with God’s rhythm for life.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
-
Do I recognize the signs of physical,
emotional, or spiritual exhaustion in my life?
-
What activities or responsibilities are
draining me the most right now?
-
Are there areas in my life where I need to
set healthy boundaries to prevent burnout?
-
Am I allowing others to help carry my burdens
(Galatians 6:2), or am I isolating myself?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I
come before You weary and burdened. I confess that I have tried to carry too
much on my own. Lord, I need Your strength and peace. Teach me to rest in Your
presence and trust in Your timing. Renew my mind, refresh my spirit, and restore
my joy. Help me to cast all my cares on You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
