FRINGE BENEFIT!

Romans 8:32 AMPC

He who did not withhold or spare [even] His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also with Him freely and graciously give us all [other] things?

A fringe benefit is something extra we get in addition to our main reward—like health insurance or a company car at work.

God gave the greatest gift—His only Son, Jesus Christ, for the salvation of humanity. Because He gave us His Son, we can be sure that He will also provide everything else we need. God’s love and generosity are shown by giving His Son as a sacrifice. If He did not hold back His Son but delivered Him up for us, then how much more will He graciously give us all other good things? This assurance encourages believers to trust in God's provision and care.

Fringe benefits in a spiritual sense also mean the additional blessings and grace God grants beyond just salvation. These could include answered prayers, wisdom, comfort, and daily provision—benefits that come from simply being in relationship with God. For example, Psalm 103:2-5 praises God for all His benefits, including forgiveness, healing, redemption, and satisfaction.

There are all kinds of benefits: specific, particular, specialist, corporate, and general benefits. We get to enjoy some or all of them. At work or as members of a group, we may be entitled to certain things—these are the extras we enjoy for being part of something. In the same way, there are benefits we enjoy just for belonging to the way of the Lord. So, fringe benefits in the Bible describe the "extras" or special blessings believers receive from God’s love and covenant—not earned by merit but given graciously as part of His care and presence.

King Solomon in 1 Kings 3:5-14 asked God for wisdom, but God not only gave him wisdom, but He also added riches, honour, and long life—fringe benefits for asking with the right heart.

The Lord often gives us extra blessings when we have trusted, waited, and obeyed Him completely. We see this with Job’s restoration and double blessings in Job 42:10–17. After Job’s suffering, God restored him and gave him twice as much as he had before. His faithfulness brought not just healing, but extra blessings. He might not have received these extras if he had given up before God’s timing.

Many believers have lost their benefits because they gave up just before crossing the finish line. Hebrews 10:35-36 clearly states that we should not throw away our confidence, which has a great reward. We need endurance so that when we have done the will of God, we may receive what is promised. If we give up before God’s timing, we miss out on these benefits. Imagine if Job had given up.

Ruth enjoyed the fringe benefits of following the right person. She received protection and provision beyond what she expected in Ruth 2:11–12 because she followed Naomi and trusted God. She received food, protection, and eventually a new family and a place in Jesus’ lineage—unexpected blessings! Extra blessings beyond measure.

Are there benefits you are enjoying right now because of who you are, where you are, what you do, and the people you know? I am! There are certain things I receive from people (most times unexpectedly) that I wouldn’t have gotten if not for ministry—these are the extras I believe the Lord blesses me with for doing His work.

Fringe benefits are transferable as we see in Exodus 15:26. The Israelites, and every believer after them, enjoy health and protection. God promised that if they obeyed Him, He would be their healer—a fringe benefit of obedience and trust. When we walk with God, He often gives us more than we ask for—not because we earn it, but because He is loving and generous. Jesus’ death gives us more than eternal salvation; it brings more benefits than some of us even know about. Whether we realize it or not, there are special benefits allocated to us for being part of the body of Christ and God’s kingdom.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- What are some “fringe benefits” you have experienced by walking with God? Think about blessings you didn’t ask for but received anyway.

- Have you ever received more than you prayed for? How did that show God’s grace?

- Why do you think God gives us extra blessings beyond salvation?

- Do you sometimes focus more on the fringe benefits than on your relationship with God?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for being such a generous and loving God. You bless me with so much more than I even asked for. Help me never take Your goodness for granted and to use what You’ve given me to bless others, in Jesus’ name, amen.
