IMAGINATION!
1 Kings 18:43 TLB
and said to his servant,
"Go and look out toward the sea." He did, but returned to Elijah and
told him, "I didn't see anything." Then Elijah told him, "Go
again, and again, and again, seven times!"
Imagination is the faculty
or action of forming new ideas, images, or concepts of external objects not
present to the senses; it is the ability of the mind to be creative or
resourceful. Imagination is the production of sensations and ideas in the mind
without any immediate input from the senses. Lack of faith, therefore, is the
failure of imagination, as seen in Ephesians 3:20. What are you imagining?
We may even call it fantasy,
but do our fantasies align with the biblical standard? Without imagination,
there can be no fantasy—the ability to imagine impossible or improbable things.
Our imagination is not only a great gift of God, but it’s also an aspect of the
image of God. Everyone has an imagination, and we always use it, whether we are
daydreaming, planning, remembering, or meditating on God’s word. Our
imagination drives our fantasies, which are the product of our creative minds.
Philippians 4:8 tells us
what to think about: “think about these things.” We may have heard or have been
told, “you have an active imagination.” Yes, considering who our Father is, we
need an active imagination to live a victorious life. The creative imagination—the
ability to conceive something that does not already exist—is the source of art
and invention. Imagination makes nearly everything we do possible, from reading
and writing to weaving stories or arguments; they all start from imagination.
We must imagine something,
see it in our mind’s eye, and visualise or fantasise about it through
meditating on the word of God to begin to see its physical manifestation,
because whatever we cannot conceive in our mind, our spirit will not
manufacture. Imagination is a major part of our faith.
As Hebrews 11:1 says, faith
is the conviction of things not seen—not physically but spiritually, in the
mind’s eye, the imagination. But we must not have vain (empty or useless)
imagination, according to Psalm 2:1.
Our imagination is very
important to the Lord, considering how many times He asked the question “what
do you see?” in the Bible.
So—what and how do you see?
Are you imagining those you’ve been praying about? Are you visualizing them in
your mind’s eyes? Or are you waiting for just anything to happen?
The Lord is asking you
today, “What do you see?”
What can you see? Imagine if
Elijah’s servant still couldn’t see what his master wanted him to see. But he
saw it—he saw a cloud the size of a man’s fist. How did that equate to rain?
Elijah probably knew,
according to Ecclesiastes 11:3, that when the clouds are full of rain, they
empty themselves on the earth. He knew the sight of the cloud meant the
approach of rain, as small as it was, because the size didn’t matter.
The Lord took Abram outside
in Genesis 15:5 to see as far as his eyes could see. This was a strategic move
on God’s part to help us, as He did Abram, understand that there are no
limitations to our imaginations and therefore no limitations to what God can
do—outside, under the open skies and heaven, where we must learn to see as far,
both physically and spiritually, as we can see.
Amos said in 7:7 that the
Lord was standing by him showing him something, but for him to see properly,
the Lord asked Amos, “what do you see?” in verse 8.
Yes, you—what are you
imagining and seeing? You need to imagine it to receive it!
