INDUSTRIOUS!
Proverbs 10:4 (Darby)
4 He cometh to want that
dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Industrious means
characterized by hard work and perseverance. It describes a person who works
hard to promote a business, task, or purpose.
According to Genesis 2:15,
humanity is the only creation made to be enterprising—to tirelessly seek to
better their condition.
God commands that anyone who
will not work should not eat, yet He always blesses the work of the industrious
person.
Work! Gainful employment!
Honest labour! These words seem to be slowly fading from society. For some, it
may sound like a curse word, while others see work as something only other
people do.
But God in Genesis 3:19
tells us that by sweating (hard work, honest labour, diligent effort) we will
eat.
There is no shortcut to
success or wealth. The process of industry must be applied to every idea for it
to become a fruitful harvest.
We shy away from work as if
it’s a disease, yet we want all the benefits that money, wealth, and prosperity
bring us.
Many characters in the Bible
had jobs, businesses, or careers, including Jesus himself according to Mark
6:3.
Now, some will say this
applies only to men, but let me introduce you to Rachel, also known as Mrs
Jacob, the first industrious woman in the Bible. According to Genesis 29:9-11,
she was a shepherd, leading and caring for her father’s flock.
How about Mrs Zipporah,
Moses’ wife? Exodus 2:16-19 tells us she and her sisters fetched water to water
their father’s flocks, and in Exodus 4:24-26, she performed what looked like a
surgeon’s task when she circumcised her son.
Being industrious is not
limited to jobs and careers; it could be anything. Ecclesiastes 9:10 puts it
this way: whatever you can do, do it diligently! And Colossians 3:17 adds that
we must do whatever we do as unto the Lord.
We can be industrious in any
field, whether spiritual, manual labour, judicial, home affairs, marketplace
business, and more. Romans 12:11 encourages us to be diligent and tireless,
glorifying the Lord in our work.
Proverbs 6:6-8 uses the ant
to teach us how industrious it can be. Animals have no cooperative jobs or
career ladders to climb, yet they never go hungry. Man is paid a wage for his
time, creativity, and labour. Whatever you receive from your industry is an
obligation as stated in Romans 4:4 and Luke 10:7, but the work must come first
to earn the wage.
The profit of your time and
energy in your industry is what comes out of it, according to Proverbs
14:23.
Are you gainfully profiting
from whatever you lay your hands on? Or are you waiting for handouts from
friends, family, or the government?
Even Paul in 1 Corinthians
9:11, knowing what the Bible expects from industry—especially in ministry—still
maintained the business of tent-making in Acts 18:1-4. He laboured with his
hands to provide for himself without depending on others.
We know the apostles ran
fishing businesses, and Matthew’s tax collection was an independent business in
those days. Luke practised medicine, and Lydia operated businesses as well in
Acts 16:14-15, 40.
Do not sleep but be
industrious, says Proverbs 20:13.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How diligent and
hardworking am I in the everyday tasks God has given me?
- In what ways can I apply
industriousness to my spiritual life and my work?
- Am I waiting for others to
provide for me, or am I actively using my talents to achieve my goals?
- How can I honour God
through my work and efforts today?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to be
diligent and hardworking in all I do. Teach me to honour You by being faithful
with the gifts and opportunities You have given me. May my work be pleasing to
You and bring blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
