MINDSET!
2 Corinthians 10:5 AMPC
[Inasmuch as we] refute
arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets
itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and
purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed
One),
The Bible never uses the
modern word “mindset,” but it speaks constantly about the state, direction, and
contents of the mind—what we would call a person’s mindset. Scripture treats
the mind as the control centre of life: what fills it shapes character,
choices, relationships, and destiny, as stated in Proverbs 4:23, which commands
us to guard our thoughts or hearts above everything because it determines the
course of our life. What occupies our thoughts shapes our character and
direction.
Mindset is how the enemy
plays mind games with us, making us think, do, and say what we ought not to,
and what is contrary to the word of God.
So many of us have allowed
our experiences, circumstances, and situations to shape our mindset and will
not allow anyone to change how we feel, think, or see something.
Mindset makes us agree 99%
of the time with the enemy because whatever is not aligned with scripture is
aligned with the enemy.
We must learn to renew our
minds daily according to Romans 12:2, which instructs us not to be conformed to
this world, but to allow our minds (mindset) to be transformed by the word of
God. Inner transformation happens as we change our mindset by focusing on God’s
truth and values.
This simply means to have a
Christ-centered mindset—a Spirit-enabled replacement of worldly programming
with God’s truth, and not self-made positive thinking that is far from
scriptural truth (see Ephesians 4:23).
The reason so many people,
including believers, aren’t progressing and advancing in life is because of the
wrong mindset. Some have stereotypical mindsets that insist things must be a
certain way before it can work. They judge God’s performance or action based on
man’s ability. Even Ephesians 3:20 states that God can do anything but based on
the power at work within us—meaning that if the mindset is off, God may be
limited in His actions in our lives.
One powerful Bible story
that speaks deeply about mindset is the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel
17. The Israelites were terrified of the Philistine giant, Goliath, who
challenged them daily. Everyone saw him as unbeatable—except David. David’s mindset
was faith over fear. While others focused on Goliath’s size and strength, David
focused on God’s power and past victories.
David’s mindset was formed
long before, from all his experiences with God. He remembered how he had
defeated lions and bears while tending sheep, which gave him confidence that
God would help him again. David’s vision was beyond limitations. He didn’t see
himself as just a boy with no armour—he saw himself as a vessel for God’s
victory.
If you’re facing a
challenge—whether in work, school, relationships, or personal growth—remember
David’s mindset: Don’t focus on the size of the problem; focus on the size of
your God. Recall your past victories; they’re proof that you can overcome again.
Step forward with faith, even if others doubt you.
Philippians 4:8 encourages
us to think on what is good, directing believers to think about “whatever is
true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, commendable…anything worthy of praise.” A
positive, godly mindset nourishes spiritual growth and will help us overcome
and defeat wrong mindsets always.
Set your mind on things
above, not on earthly things. That means taking our focus off the natural and
placing it on the supernatural, as commanded in Colossians 3:2—“Set your minds
on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” The natural default
human mindset drifts toward the visible and immediate, but we must learn and
discipline ourselves to deliberately anchor our attention and affection on the
unseen, eternal realities.
We can do this and change
our mindset through prayer, Bible reading and study, and scripture-based
speech.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
-
Am I focusing more on the size of the problem
or the power of God?
-
Are there negative patterns of thinking I
need to surrender to God for lasting change and greater peace?
-
What thoughts or attitudes do I need to renew
so my mind aligns more closely with God's truth?
-
How does my current mindset affect my
actions, relationships, and spiritual growth?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to see challenges not as threats, but as opportunities to trust You more. Strengthen my mindset to reflect Your truth, not my limitations, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
