MOTIVATION!
1 Corinthians 15:54 AMPC
And when this perishable
puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom
from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed
up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory.
Motivation is what makes you
want to do something or try your best. It’s the reason you get up in the
morning, work hard at school, help others, or keep going even when things are
tough. Motivation is what pushes a person to succeed in whatever they do. In
short:
Motivation is the “push”
inside you that helps you do things!
There are all kinds of
motivational speakers and motivational speeches today, with so many people
telling and pushing us toward that goal we think or suppose we want. Motivation
is a necessary tool and skill to have in any area of society. If we deal with
people, we’ll need to motivate them sometimes to take certain actions.
But our motivation—the
reason why we do things—should come from a good heart and a desire to please
God, not just to impress people or get rewards. Colossians 3:23 says that
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not
for people.” This means we should do our best because we want to honour God,
not just to get praise from others.
What motivates us to keep
going? What’s our motivation for getting out of bed daily and participating in
all the things we do?
We all need motivation
occasionally; we can’t do it on our own. It is not a case of being weak or
intelligent—we are born with motivation, and we need it to go the extra mile.
When we are not motivated to act but want to do something, we need that push to
make a move.
Although it’s wonderful to
hear someone else telling us how well we’re doing or can do, as believers, our
motivation must ultimately be from scripture and the Father, not the world
around us.
David declared that he is
motivated to do the Lord’s delight in Psalm 40:8—truly, if the Lord does not
help us, where else can we go? Nowhere! If the Lord does not motivate us to
take a step, who can? No one!
The declaration of the Lord
in Isaiah 49:1-3 concerning His servants should motivate us to think as David
did in Psalm 73:25—that we have no one in heaven or earth who can help us
accomplish what God has planned for us.
Our motivation as believers
comes from the desire to have peace with God and follow Jesus’s motivational
example in John 4:34 for us to be motivated in life.
The Bible is packed full of
motivational speeches or verses for diverse needs.
Ezra 6 recounts the efforts
to rebuild the temple, with opposition and conflict delaying the construction
for 14 years. Zechariah and the leaders, backed by God’s power and
encouragement, motivated the completion of the temple.
As believers, we are
motivated by the Spirit of Jesus Christ to do anything we set our minds to,
with the knowledge that we were created, gifted, and empowered to do anything.
Solomon’s discourse in
Ecclesiastes 4 may sound futile but it addresses motivation. According to him,
nothing seems to satisfy people—and it's true. From Solomon’s point of view, as
believers we must understand people's motivational needs; everyone has a
primary need to be helped or motivated to achieve a specific goal.
People are motivated, or
moved to action, by many different things—to provide for their family, to make
loved ones proud, or to accomplish a difficult goal.
We should know, as Paul did
in Philippians 3:14, that what is in heaven is worth so much more than what is
on earth right now. Our priorities should be motivated to sacrifice our lives
so that more people would come to know the saving love of Christ.
Our prayers, according to
James 4:3, must be motivated by scriptural intentions and desires, not carnal
or selfish desires. Sometimes we need motivation to get those potentials in us
going! Be motivated by the Lord!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What pushes you to do what
you’re doing? To succeed, to show you can, or to honour someone?
- How much of scripture
motivates you to want to do better and improve? Why?
- Who best lights the fire
of motivation within you—God, Christians, books, or motivational speakers?
- Is motivation enough to
keep you focused on your goal in the face of adversity?
PRAYER: Lord, may I always
remember that all my motives are weighed by you; help me to focus on your word
more than on men, in Jesus’ name, amen.
