PAID IN FULL!

John 19:28-31 TLB

Jesus knew that everything was now finished, and to fulfill the Scriptures said, "I'm thirsty." [29] A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so a sponge was soaked in it and put on a hyssop branch and held up to his lips. [30] When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished," and bowed his head and dismissed his spirit. [31] The Jewish leaders didn't want the victims hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath at that, for it was the Passover), so they asked Pilate to order the legs of the men broken to hasten death; then their bodies could be taken down.

Is there anyone without any kind of debt? There are all kinds of debts, and everyone owes someone something—we owe in cash, kind, or even time. Creditors always seek payment; we get calls, letters, and personal visits demanding us to “pay up.”

When these calls come and we lack the resources, we ask for an extension, forgiveness, or cancellation of the debt. Sometimes, we "rob Peter to pay Paul," using unusual means to settle what we owe.

The profound message of the cross is that Jesus paid it all! He paid our debt in full—no part payment, no instalments, no payment plans, no IOUs. He paid it all.

The debt Jesus referred to is what the world owed God—a physical and spiritual debt with far-reaching effects for those who refuse God’s payment plan. We are all born into debt—not financial, but spiritual debt. Everyone is conceived and born into spiritual debt because of sin, meaning we are spiritually “in the red,” without capacity to pay off the debt ourselves.

Colossians 2:13–14 states: "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross."

What would you do if someone told you your debt is paid in full, and you’re not required to do anything in return—just believe and accept the gift? Accept the paid-in-full voucher and walk away debt-free. Daily, the Bible tells us our bill has been paid in full. We don’t have to work for the payment; we simply accept the “finished” work of the cross and receive the “paid in full” card. When Jesus said, “It is finished,” did He simply mean His physical suffering was over?

Did He mean the price He paid for our salvation was only partial, that more suffering was needed over the next three days? NO! He declared it paid in full.

Did His soul and spirit need to suffer more before redemption was finalized? NO!

Imagine a criminal standing trial, facing a long sentence or death. When the time comes for sentencing, the judge steps down from the bench, swaps places with the criminal, and serves the sentence. The criminal goes free—the sentence is paid in full.

What paid for your salvation?

Was it the beatings at Pilate’s Hall?

Was it the nails in His hands and feet?

Was it the crown of thorns?

What was it?

All the sufferings of Christ served a purpose, fulfilling the Law, bringing healing, but only His shed blood washes away sin.

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He meant the price for our redemption was paid in full. He had suffered and was ready to surrender His life willingly, and the price for all mankind was forever paid once and for all. Our debt of sin was paid in full by the precious, pure blood of Jesus—paid in full!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

-         How does knowing Jesus paid your debt in full affect your daily life and choices?

-         What debts—spiritual, emotional, or relational—are you still trying to pay by your own efforts?

-         What does it mean to accept Christ’s “paid in full” gift instead of trying to earn forgiveness?

-         How can you share the message of complete forgiveness through Jesus with others around you?

PRAYER: Father, thank You for sending Jesus to pay the debt for my sins—completely and forever. Help me to walk daily in freedom, knowing the price has been paid in full. Teach me to rest in Your finished work and share Your unconditional love and grace with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
