THE GOODNESS OF GOD!

Psalm 103:1-22 AMPC

Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy name! [2] Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits- [3] Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases, [4] Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, Who beautifies, dignifies, and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercy; [5] Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]! [6] The Lord executes righteousness and justice [not for me only, but] for all who are oppressed. [7] He made known His ways [of righteousness and justice] to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. [8] The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy and loving-kindness. [9] He will not always chide or be contending, neither will He keep His anger forever or hold a grudge. [10] He has not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. [11] For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great are His mercy and loving-kindness toward those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him. [12] As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. [13] As a father loves and pities his children, so the Lord loves and pities those who fear Him [with reverence, worship, and awe]. [14] For He knows our frame, He [earnestly] remembers and imprints [on His heart] that we are dust. [15] As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. [16] For the wind passes over it and it is gone, and its place shall know it no more. [17] But the mercy and loving-kindness of the Lord are from everlasting to everlasting upon those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him, and His righteousness is to children's children- [18] To such as keep His covenant [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying it] and to those who [earnestly] remember His commandments to do them [imprinting them on their hearts]. [19] The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all. [20] Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His commandments, hearkening to the voice of His word. [21] Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, all you His hosts, you His ministers who do His pleasure. [22] Bless the Lord, all His works in all places of His dominion; bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul!

Goodness is a character of God! Psalm 103 is a joyous song of praise, where King David rises from thankful acknowledgment for his personal blessings to a vibrant celebration of God's gracious attributes, reminding us that God is not just worthy of praise, but also the sustainer of life. David concludes by inviting all creatures to join in his song—so we too must praise Him.

When do you make the Lord the object of your praise? Sometimes, often, only when you feel like it, or always? How do you describe the Lord? Through His Word, His works in your life, or the evidence of who He is? We are called to sing of the goodness of the Lord always, continually, and without ceasing.

In verse 3, David describes the Lord’s character as it was revealed to Moses in Exodus 34:6: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in goodness and truth. This is a time to reflect and meditate on the goodness of God. How great is God’s faithful love towards you? Verses 11–13 say God’s faithful love is as high as the heavens are above the earth—beyond what we can understand.

The lyrics of “The Goodness of God” by CeCe Winans capture this spirit:

“I love You, Lord. For Your mercy never fails me. All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands.

From the moment that I wake up, until I lay my head, I will sing of the goodness of God.

And all my life You have been faithful, and all my life You have been so, so good,

With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.”

Thank God for His mercies that are renewed every day, as Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us.

We have all come through challenging, uncertain times, but one thing is sure: we are held securely in the Lord’s hands every day, both morning and night, because of His faithfulness and goodness.

Mark 10:18 teaches us that only God is truly good, and only He can show indescribable goodness despite who we are.

Let your song this season be: “God, You’re so good. You’re so good to me.”

Take time to think about God’s goodness and blessings. As you reflect, bless the Lord with your soul, your finances, your family, and your praises.

David understood the ongoing benefits of God’s loyal love for His people—that understanding filled him with praise for God’s goodness. Let that be you: erupt in praise for His many benefits.

God’s mercy flows from His goodness. The Lord would still be good even if He never showed mercy, because mercy is not required (see Romans 9:14–24). Yet, by His mercy, God has chosen to show goodness in a special way to His people.

God’s goodness is seen in His mercy and generosity—not withholding any good thing from those who walk with Him, as stated in Psalm 84:11.

We are truly blessed beyond measure because we serve a God who is so good that His goodness demands mercy, as seen in Exodus 34:6: “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in goodness and truth”.

The evidence of God’s goodness is all around us—He sustains, preserves, protects, and provides for us. Mark 10:18 says only the Father is good. Psalm 145:5 encourages us to meditate on and speak about the goodness of God.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- Am I intentional about praising God every day, or only when I feel like it?

- Do I recognize God’s goodness even in difficult seasons of life?

- How have I experienced God’s mercy and faithful love in my own life recently?

- In what practical ways can I bless the Lord with my soul, my words, and my actions?

PRAYER: Lord, God, thank you for being the great Jehovah, I extol and praise you for your goodness, mercy and grace towards because you are consistently faithful in Jesus’ name, amen.
