TWO RACES—HUMAN AND ANIMAL!
Galatians 3:28-29 TLB
We are no longer Jews or Greeks or slaves or
free men or even merely men or women, but we are all the same-we are
Christians; we are one in Christ Jesus. [29] And now that we are Christ's we
are the true descendants of Abraham, and all of God's promises to him belong to
us.
Racism is the opinion or judgment formed
without rationale by a person or group—an unreasonable objection against anyone
or anything, without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge.
The Bible firmly teaches against racism,
emphasizing that all people are created in the image of God and are of equal
worth and dignity according to Genesis 1:27. There is no biblical justification
for treating one group as superior or inferior based on race or ethnicity.
With technological advancement in all walks of
life, one would expect that the issue of racism would end or at least reduce
and fade, but sadly that’s not so. If all recent and ongoing issues surrounding
race are anything to go by, more than 100,000 racist hate crimes are recorded
yearly. Racism is a scourge to society and should never be tolerated because,
in God’s eyes, there is no value attached to the colour of skin.
We all live, breathe, exist, and are worth the
blood of Jesus. Everyone across the globe is individually, lovingly created by
God, and all believers are one body in Christ.
If God had made everyone and everything the
same, life would be boring—a warehouse of robots made according to one
prototype, expected to perform according to human standards.
Racism is not a new affliction of our
generation or limited to one society. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism
based on race, ethnicity or skin colour—especially against minorities or
marginalized groups—is as old as time. It is a deep-rooted evil destroying
lives and society. Everyone feels the effects of it—religious groups, ethnic
groups—no one is immune to racism issues.
Is racism a sin? Yes, it’s a sin. God created
humanity in His image—ALL humans! Racism is a direct attack on God by refusing
to acknowledge His image in someone of another colour.
Scripture teaches us that hatred towards
another is equal to murder. Hatred can be passive or active. If someone lives
in habitual hatred toward others, it shows they are not a new creation in
Christ as seen in 1 John 3:15-16. That doesn’t mean Christians can’t struggle
with racism in their hearts—many do. The seed of racism lies within all races.
We must continually repent of racist thoughts and tendencies and pray against a
judgmental spirit. Instead, pray for a greater love for others.
John 4:4-9 records a real episode of racism.
Samaritans were seen as half-breeds by Jews in Jesus’s day, but instead of
ignoring or fuelling this woman’s issues of racism, Jesus had a life-changing
conversation that transformed her thinking and life.
Racism is an attack on the inclusiveness of
the gospel. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s heart for inclusion. God offers
salvation to all. The gospel opposes all racism, ethnic hatred, and
favouritism, as these are contrary to God’s character. God wants us to spread
the gospel to all nations.
Revelation 7:9 shows that God’s plan for unity
is vibrant and beautiful—around His throne will be people from every tribe,
language, people and nation. Psalm 86:9 declares, “All the nations you have
made will come and worship before you, Lord”—reminding us that God saves people
from every nation, tribe, and tongue. All people are precious to the Lord.
Let’s pray for humility to regard others as
more important than ourselves. When we esteem others above ourselves, something
beautiful happens—Christians increase in love and unity regardless of race or
ethnicity.
No matter the background, gender or race, the
presence of Christ in believers makes them one in Him according to Galatians
3:26-29.
Racism, unfortunately, is a language many
understand and exhibit—sometimes more than love—and it tells more about those
who practice it than those they insult.
Remember: God loves everyone, and we all
belong to Him.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS

racism, and how did it affect you or others involved?
- Why do you think racism persists despite
advances in society and technology?
- How can remembering that all are made in
God’s image help Christians fight racism?
- In what ways can you show greater love and
unity to those from different backgrounds than yourself?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to celebrate the
diversity of your creation and be united with all people, without prejudice, in
Jesus’ name. Amen.
