WHAT QUALIFIED YOU?
Romans 5:7-9 TLB
Even if we were good, we
really wouldn't expect anyone to die for us, though, of course, that might be
barely possible. [8] But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to
die for us while we were still sinners. [9] And since by his blood he did all
this for us as sinners, how much more will he do for us now that he has
declared us not guilty? Now he will save us from all of God's wrath to come.
Qualification is having the
skills, knowledge, or experience needed to do something. It can also mean a
certificate or proof that you have learned or trained for a job, school, or
activity. For example, if you want to play on a football team, you need to be
good at football—that's a qualification! If you finish school and get a
certificate, that’s a qualification. If you know how to swim, you are qualified
to join a swimming competition. In short, qualification is what makes you ready
or able to do something well!
From the Bible’s
perspective, qualification means being fit, ready, or approved by God to do
something—especially to serve Him or help others. In the Bible, qualification
is not just about skills or certificates, but about the heart, faith, and
obedience to God.
As 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “The
LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward
appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” God chose people who loved Him
and were willing to obey, even if they didn’t feel “qualified.”
So, what qualifies you for
the things you’re doing? In the circular world, you must have some form of
qualification to do certain things, but in God’s Kingdom, the Lord doesn’t need
us to have what the world expects before we can work for Him.
Christians are justified,
that is, declared right before God, because of Christ’s blood that was poured
out at the cross. This is what qualifies us to walk in faith and
righteousness—not ourselves.
Yet today, people want us to
jump through human hoops and hurdles to “qualify” for Christian work. God gives
us what we need to do His calling, not expecting us to “find” it before we are
qualified. In the same way, He gave Moses, David, Esther, and others the
strength, wisdom, and courage to do His work—even when they felt unqualified.
How about you? Are you doing
what you are doing because you think you are qualified? What qualified you? 2
Corinthians 3:5 is very clear: “Not that we are competent in ourselves... but
our competence comes from God.” Simply put, our qualification is from God. This
means being willing, faithful, and trusting God to help you do what He asks.
God can use anyone who is ready to listen and obey!
Ephesians 2:8-10 also says
that “grace” qualifies us more than works. It is not your ability, but your
spiritual growth, faith, and being rooted in Christ. God often chooses and
qualifies people by His grace, not by their own merit or credentials.
No one is qualified to do
God’s work just by having “powerful, spiritual and anointed” mentors or parents
in the Lord—what does this even mean? Matthew 23:9 seems to have become
invisible or irrelevant, as most people now follow and obey the “spiritual leader”
more than they follow and obey the Lord.
Some people think you must
go to “seminary” or “theology school” to train and qualify for God. Really? How
about what 1 John 2:27 says: “You have an anointing. You received it from Him,
and His anointing remains on you. You do not need any other teacher. But as His
anointing instructs you in all the essentials (all the truth uncontaminated by
darkness and lies), it teaches you this: 'Remain connected to Him.'” If this is
true—and it is—then nothing we do on our own qualifies us.
On the other hand, many have
qualified themselves to the point where they think they can do the Lord’s work
without His Spirit. But the main “qualification” for spiritual service is to be
rooted in Jesus and empowered by His Spirit according to John 15:5; and Colossians
2:6-7.
Are you qualified? What
qualified you? God, man, or yourself?
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- When do you feel
“qualified” to do something, and what gave you that sense—God, people, or
yourself?
- How does knowing that God
looks at the heart change the way you see your own qualifications for serving
Him?
- Do you find yourself
trying to earn God’s approval by human standards? Why or why not?
- In what ways can you pay
more attention to God’s call and anointing, instead of just certificates or
people’s opinions?
PRAYER: Father, Lord, thank
you for your grace for your glory and for declaring me righteous through the
blood of Jesus Christ. Amen.
