DON’T BE DRIVEN BUT LED!

Jeremiah 42:1-4 TLB

Then Johanan and the army captains and all the people, great and small, came to Jeremiah [2] and said, "Please pray for us to the Lord your God, for as you know so well, we are only a tiny remnant of what we were before. [3] Beg the Lord your God to show us what to do and where to go." [4] "All right," Jeremiah replied. "I will ask him and I will tell you what he says. I will hide nothing from you."

Are you being led or driven? The Spirit of God leads, but Satan drives. Who is leading you—yourself, your peers, society, social media, or God?

Who is driving you—yourself, your peers, your parents, or Satan?

We notice that, just like some of us do daily, these men consulted God not so much to know what was right, but more out of a desire for Him to authorize what they had already determined to do—whether it agreed with God’s will or not.

Galatians 5:16 says we will not fulfil the desires of the flesh if we walk by, or are led by, the Spirit of God.

The devil can drive us into works that appear righteous and good but are deceptively hidden in light—yet still works of unrighteousness and evil, according to 2 Corinthians 11:13–15.

Sometimes, even being led by the Spirit may appear to be the work of the enemy, as seen with Jesus in Luke 4:1. The Spirit always leads us where it is most beneficial to us and glorifying to the Father, even if it seems contrary.

It’s not difficult to act the part of a regular and committed churchgoer—someone who, though driven by the devil, can still sing hymns and worship God publicly in a convincingly well-rehearsed and practiced way. Like these men, who used the right words and attitudes to inquire of Jeremiah, yet had no intention of obeying whatever the Lord told them through the prophet.

They had a plan they wanted Jeremiah to bless. Unfortunately, God does not honour such prayers and plans.

Are you, perhaps, being driven by the enemy in ways that look and sound godly, yet want God to lead you? God doesn’t lead what He hasn’t graced us for. For God to lead us away from Satan’s drive, we must, according to James 4:7, resist Satan by submitting to and drawing near to God.

According to 1 John 3:10, there is no middle ground between the children of God—being led by the Spirit of God—and the children of the devil—driven by Satan. Satan does not lead anyone to anything or anywhere good, as seen in John 10:10. That would be counterproductive for him. But the Spirit of God leads us to hope and a future with an expected end in God, according to Jeremiah 29:11.

As Christians, our allegiance and obedience are always to the Lord and no one else. Those who know the greatness and goodness of God will seek to be led by His Spirit in all areas of their lives and will be able to recognize the devil as the deceptive angel of light.

Those who are driven by Satan become ungodly and unholy, filled with vain babbling and false godliness.

We must not be driven by peers, friends, society, or media to go against the true doctrine of the gospel, as that is the enemy’s strongest tool to drive a wedge between us and God.

Anyone or anything telling and encouraging us to deviate from the truth of God’s Word is driving us. But being led by the Spirit helps us follow the doctrines, principles, and truth of God—no matter where it leads. You are God’s child if you are led by the Spirit, as stated in Romans 8:14.

Be led, not driven!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

-        Who or what influences most of your decisions—God, people, or circumstances?

-        Can you identify moments when you were driven by fear, pressure, or ambition rather than led by the Spirit?

-        Have you ever asked God to bless a plan you already made without seeking His will first? What was the outcome?

-        How do you respond when God’s leading seems contrary to your expectations or comfort?

PRAYER: Lord of Heaven’s armies, I surrender myself to be led by Your Spirit in all things. Enable me to always obey Your instructions and leading, and to shun the driving force of the enemy, in Jesus’s name. Amen.
